TOPIC

GRAPH
OF
QUADRATIC FUNCTIONS
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES
• Graphing of Quadratic Function in order to identify the
shape of curve( parabola) , determining the maximum
and minimum value of a quadratic function and finding
the vertex and axis of the parabola.

PRACTICAL APPLICATION
• Quadratic equation are actually used in
everyday life, as when calculating areas,
determining a product’s profit or formulating a
speed of an object.
What do we mean when we say a graph is
symmetrical?
The quadratic function is symmetrical because a line,
axis of symmetry, divides it into two equal parts.

What do you know about the vertex?

It is the point where the axis of symmetry divides the
graph into two equal parts.
It is also where the minimum or maximum value of the
quadratic function of the graph is found.
Identify which graph has a
negative leading coefficient ?

This graph has a positive This graph has a negative

leading coefficient, because it leading coefficient, because it
opens up. opens down.
• 𝑦 = −2𝑥 2 + 8𝑥 − 3
• 𝑦 = −2(22 ) + 8 2 − 3
• 𝑦 = −2 4 +16 − 3
• 𝑦= 5
APPLICATION
Draw the graph of the quadratic function
𝒙𝟐 − 𝟒𝒙 + 𝟑 and hence find the roots of the
equation 𝒙𝟐 − 𝟒𝒙 + 𝟑=0 . Find the minimum
value of the function.

Solution:
Since the value of a > 0 (positive) , hence
the parabola concave upward.
The graph constructed with the points
(6, 15), (5, 8) , (4, 3), (3, 0) , (2, -1) and (1, 0) .

The graph cuts the x-axis at the points (1,0)

and (3, 0).
Hence the two roots of quadratic equation
are 1 and 3.
The minimum value of the graph is -1
CONCLUSION
• The shape of all Quadratic functions (equations) is a Parabola.
• We had the Quadratic equations equal to zero. That just
means that when we solve them, we are finding the ‘x’ value
(the place the parabola crosses the ‘x’ axis) when the ‘y’ value
is zero.
• The parabola open upward and its vertex is minimum when
the value of ‘a’ is positive but 𝒂 ≠ 𝟎 .
• The parabola open downward and its vertex is maximum
when the value of ‘a’ is negative but 𝒂 ≠ 𝟎 .
• The points where the parabola cuts the x-axis gives the two
roots of the quadratic equation.
