Mariam is one of the central characters in Khaled Hosseini's novel "A Thousand
Splendid Suns." She is a complex and deeply compelling character whose life journey is
a poignant reflection of the struggles and resilience of Afghan women during decades of
political turmoil and conflict. Mariam's story is one of suffering, endurance, and
ultimately, redemption.
Mariam is born out of wedlock, which makes her an illegitimate child and the source of
shame and disappointment for her mother, Nana. Her father, Jalil, is a wealthy
businessman who keeps his relationship with Nana a secret and visits Mariam only
once a week. Despite her circumstances, Mariam longs for her father's love and
acceptance, which she never truly receives. The early years of her life are marked by
loneliness and isolation.
As Mariam grows older, she is married off to a much older man named Rasheed, a
traditional and abusive husband. She is forced to leave her mother and the only home
she has ever known to live in a distant, war-torn city. Mariam's marriage to Rasheed, a
man who represents the oppressive gender dynamics of Afghan society, is a turning
point in her life. Her husband's physical and emotional abuse becomes a constant
presence in her life, and she learns to navigate the harsh realities of being a wife in an
unforgiving and patriarchal society.
