AtelieHandmade Minion Purse Eng
This is the second version of the minion purse I created for a friend. The first was
made using this pattern but it did not have a front cover . It looked good and cute,
just like a playful minion. But I really wanted to make a purse with something that
looks like overalls, so I used the pattern and added a front cover. This way it looks
more like a minion dressed in a tiny overall. The beauty of this pattern is that you can
make a bigger bag by making a bigger base chain. If you make a bigger base chain,
you must make more rows, in order for the purse to look good and symetric.
The model of the purse is worked with 1 DC and one slip stitch, which means you
must work your slip stitches loosely, so you will be able to work another stitch in
that slip stitch in the following row. For the bag part you can work in the round, but
for the cover part you will turn your rows.
If you are not going to line the purse with cotton fabric, make sure you will use
transparent thread to sew the eyes and the suspenders. It will look prettier without
the marks of sewn thread.
This is a pattern for a begginner / intermediate. You must be familiar with the
following American crochet terminology: single crochet, double crochet, half double
crochet, slip stitch, back/front loop.
The finished bag was about 22 cm long and 20 cm tall, it might end up 1-2 cm smaller
or bigger depending on how loosely/tight you crochet. For this pattern I recommend
using cotton yarn, weight 2 sport. Crochet hook of 4 mm or a G hook. Do not forget
to get a tapestry needle and 2 buttons.
For the eyes I used plain white, grey and black cotton yarn. You can use whatever
kind of sport weight 2 yarn you can find in your local store, it really does not have to
be Catania if you cannot find it in your yarn store.
PATTERN UPDATE, JULY 2015: added an extra way of making this bag: instead of
using the DC, sl st method, I also use the moss stitch : sc, ch 2, skip 1 sc. Photos and
details at the end of this pattern.
R1: 3 sc in the second ch from hook, 33 sc and finish with 3 sc in the last ch, 33 sc and
sl st to close the row. You should have 72 sc in total.
R2: Ch 2, 2 HDC in the next 3 sc, 33 HDC, 2 HDC in the next 3 sc, 33 HDC and sl st – in
total: 78 HDC
R3: work in back loops only: 78 HDC all around, sl st to close the row.
R4: begin model: CH 2, ”sl st in the next, 1 DC in the next” - repeat till the end of the
row.
R5: CH 2, *1 DC, sl st *– repeat till the end of the row
Repeat R4 & R5 with yellow yarn untill your bag will reach the height of 21 cm.
Once your bag has reached the desired height, make a row of sc – 78 in total.
The next row will be of 78 HDC. Make a row of slip stitches - 78. Break yarn, weave in
ends. This way the edge of the bag looks better, is more defined.
Flap:
Join yarn in one corner of the purse and work in the front loop and make 34 HDC.
Then make one row of 34 HDC in both loops.
And to make the front cover bend over the purse, work another row of 34 HDC in
front loops.
Now stat the purse front cover working a row of 34 sc.
Turn, ch 1, *sl st, 1 DC* – repeat till the end of the row. - 34 stitches
Turn, ch 2, *1 DC, Sl st *– repeat till the end of the row. - 34 stitches
Repeat these two last rows untill you will reach the blue bottom once you bend the
cover over the bag.
Make sure you add an extra row of sc on all 3 edges of the flap (left, center and
right), then for a more defined touch, make another row of slip stitches.
Suspenders – make 2
with blue yarn: Chain 7
Work 1 sc in each ch – 6 sc, turn ch 1.
Make 3 more rows, each of 6 sc. In the 5th row sc in the next 2 sc then chain 3 and
skip 2 sc and make 1 sc in the last 2 stitches.
Last row: sc in each stitch – 6 sc.
Slip stitch across the suspender, it will provide for a ferm grip. Using an transparent
thread, sew the suspenders on the yellow cover of the purse as seen in the picture
below:
Or, if you are going to line the purse with fabric, use the same yarn to sew the
suspenders. The yarn will be hidden once you line your purse with some fabric.
Notice the edge with slip stitches?
For the strap – make 2, one with yellow yarn and one with blue yarn.
Chain 8, turn, ch 1, sc in each stitch – 7 sc.
Repeat until you have reached the desired lenght. Mine was about 80 cm long.
Place the blue and the yellow straps one above the other and secure them with slip
stitches all around. I used grey yarn for the slip stitches, I like the contrast :)
Then sew the strap on the sides of the purse.
Eyes: - work in the round
For black pupil: ch 1, make 14 HDC in the second chain from hook. Sl st, close and
sew on the white part of the eye.
PATTERN UPDATE: JULY 2015:
The additional method of making this purse:
1. With blue yarn chain 36 (or 42 or 48 or 52 or how many it takes for the purse to have
the desired lenght).
2. 3 sc in the second ch from hook, 33 sc and finish with 3 sc in the last ch, 33 sc and
sl st to close the row. You should have 72 sc in total.
3. Ch 2, 2 HDC in the next 3 sc, 33 HDC, 2 HDC in the next 3 sc, 33 HDC and sl st – in
total: 78 HDC
4. begin moss stitch : sc, ch 2, skip 1 sc, sc, ch 2, skip 1, sc, repeat till the end. You can
now work in the round. If you crochet loosely, please make sure you use a one size
smaller hook. If you crochet very tight - like I do, use the recommended hook, of 4
mm.
Make enough rows with blue yarn until you will have at least 5 cm (or more if you
are making a bigger purse). Then change to yellow yarn, weave in ends, and make
that moss stitch untill you will have reached about 21 cm in height.
Before you start working on the flap, make sure you make a row of sc. One sc in
each sc and one sc in each ch2 from previous row.
Then make one row of slip stitches. This way the edge looks more defined and it
doesn't stretch too much, so you can line your purse with some nice fabric.
To start the flap, join yellow yarn in one corner of the purse. Ch 1 and work in the sc
made before the slip stitches. 34 sc in total.
For the eyes and the straps use the same indications written above.
For the eyes, measure your flap horizontally (see picture). For example, mine was 22
cm. Meaning that at the half of my flap, the eyes should meet. At the 11 cm mark the
eyes of the minion joined.
Then the small blue straps are sewed at the end of each eye. Its easier this way and
the eyes are positioned in the middle of the flap.
And the finished purse with the moss stitch:
Lining the purse with fabric:
First of all, measure your purse. If yours is 21 cm long and 21 cm tall, then fold your
fabric in two and measure 22x22 cm on that fabric. One cm is for the sewing.
Cut that 22x22 cm piece and fold it with the wrong side up. Sew the 3 edges,
resulting with some kind of pouch.
Do not forget to fold the edge of the fabric and sew that too. It will keep the fabric
from fraying and you can sew it better on the purse. see picture
Now place the resulted pouch inside the purse and fix it with some needles. Then
use some transparent thread to sew the purse and the fabric altogether.
For lining the strap, measure it. If your flap is 21 cm long and 16 cm tall, cut a piese of
fabric that is 22 x 17 cm. One cm of the fabric you will use in sewing the edges, to
keep the fabric from fraying.
Then fix it on the flap with some needles and sew them altogether using transparent
thread.
If you do not have transparent thread, use yellow - this way it will not be visible on
the outside of the purse.
