f. Non programmable silent electronic calculators and KNEC mathematical table may be used,
except where stated otherwise.
g. This paper consists of 14 printed pages. Candidates should check to ascertain that all pages

rest. If sh. 1200 more is spent on food than water bill. Find how much they saved (3 marks)

5. Solve the simultaneous equations ( 4 marks)

6. A salesman dealing in iphones earns a basic salary and commission as follows.

For sales up to ksh. 150,000 0%
For sales above ksh. 150,000
- First ksh. 85,000 3%
- Next ksh. 85,000 4%
- Any amount above 5%

In the month of December 2022, the salesman earned a basic salary of ksh. 25,000 and he
sold 100 iphones at a discount of 10%. Calculate;
a) His total sales in the month of December if the iphones were marked at Ksh. 5000.
(1 mark)

b) His total earnings that month. (3 marks)

7. Simplify the following by rationalizing the denominator. (3 marks)

9. Solve 2 x 2 + 3x − 5 = 0 using completing square method (3 marks)

10. The base and height of a right-angled triangle are 4cm and 5cm respectively. Calculate the
percentage error in its area. (3 marks)

11. A cone is made from a sector whose dimensions are given below. Calculate the volume of

the cone. (𝑇𝑎𝑘𝑒 𝜋 = 7 ). OA = OB = 7cm radius of the sector and
< 𝐴𝑂𝐵 = 1200 .Give your answer to 3 significant figures.

24. Kimaeti is a town centre 600km from Nairobi city. A bus starts from Nairobi for Kimaeti
at 7.00am at an average speed of 80km/h. At 8.30am a car started from Nairobi to Kimaeti
and moved at an average speed of 120km/hr using the same route. Calculate;
a) The distance covered by the bus before the car started its journey. (3 marks)

b) The relative speed for the two vehicles. (2 marks)

c) The time the car overtook the bus: (1 mark)

d) Distance covered by the car before overtaking the bus. (2 marks)

e) Distance from Kimaeti to the car at the time the car was overtaking the bus. (3 marks)
