Project Description
The city of Montreal has decided to plan and construct a public parking lot in Beaconsfield
(West Island) with several charging stations to encourage the usage of electric vehicles.

Scope of Work
The scope of work for this project includes the proposal to construct the parking lot with the
capacity to contain a maximum of thirty-three cars, twenty bicycles, and nine charging stations.
It involves developing the activities to construct this parking lot, the work breakdown schedule,
and a cost estimate for this project.

Methodology and Activities (Parking lot)

1. Planning and Design

1.1 Site Evaluation

The location of the park is next to Beacon Hill Elementary School (see Figure 1). An assessment
of the land is required to record all the primary data needed to design a parking lot.

1.2 Conceptual Design

The design will be modified according to the data collected from site analysis. As a reference, a
parking space for one car (US Standard large) is 6.1x 2.74 m2. The design also considers the
allowance between cars, maneuvering space needed for entrance and exit, pedestrian roads,
places to install charging stations (including underground wire), and drainage system. Finally,
the bike and emergency lanes will be sketched and calculated for efficient and safe roads. This
stage will be taken care of by the engineering and architecture firm.

1.3 Obtain permit

The project needs construction permits in Montreal before the construction phase. The permits
must include the approval for excavating, asphalting leveling, installation, and destroying.

2. Site Preparation

2.1 Clear Site & fencing

Before commencing any work, fences/ barriers are constructed based on the regulations.

The construction team will start clearing the site to ensure that the site is suitable for construction
and free from obstacles or hazards. In this process, existing structures will be demolished and
removed from the site. Trees and grasses will be cut down and removed, preventing them from
interfering with construction. Equipment are required (see Figure 1)

Figure 1
2.2 Excavation
The excavation will proceed under the supervision and instructions of the engineering team to
ensure undesired damage to underground water pipes or gas pipes. Unwanted soil or rocks are
excavated and the land is leveled and graded to create a stable foundation for construction, which
may include filling low areas and compacting the soil. This process requires heavy machinery
such as bulldozers and excavators.

3. Construction

3.1 Sub-layer

A sub-base of compacted gravel or crushed stone is required to provide a stable foundation. The
drainage system and electrical system will be installed according to the design.

An inspection is necessary before advancing further.

3.2 Underground systems (electrical and drainage)

Due to the safety measures, two systems need to be completely isolated. For the underground
wire system, the wires need to be contained within metal or non metallic conduit; the depth of
the wire system at least needs to be 0.6 meters. Based on the conceptual design, reserve the
position of electrical connection that is needed for the charging station and any electrical
equipment. The drainage system is necessary for redirecting water accumulation on the surface
through underground pipe systems. Trenching or excavator machine is needed.

An inspection is necessary before advancing further.

[1]
3.3 Evaluation
quality control and evaluation for installation of both underground systems. This is important to
make sure all systems are ready to go for both quality of project and safety factor.
3.4 Paving

Lay down the primary surface material, typically asphalt or concrete, and ensure it is properly
compacted and leveled. Curing time is required for the paving material to harden, especially for
concrete surfaces.

An inspection is necessary before advancing further.

3.5 installation of charging station

Installing EV charging units according to manufacturer specifications and safety standards.

Verifying proper electrical connections and functionality. Providing instructions and support
contact information at each charging station. Using the SAE J1772 universal connector, all
electrical car can be charged with this connector.
3.6 Marking and Signage

Based on the design, painting lines to designate individual parking spaces, including accessible
spaces and directional arrows. Installing signs for directions, parking regulations, accessible
parking, and any other necessary information.

3.7 Bike Rack installation

Bike racks offer a secure place for cyclists to park their bikes, minimizing the risk of theft or
damage. When conveniently located, they make it easy for cyclists to park close to their
destinations.

3.8 Testing

Before introducing the parking lot to the public, final inspections will be conducted to ensure the
quality of the work. The inspections will determine:

● If any sign of subsidence or leakage.

● The ability to withstand exceed weight capacity.
● The performance of the drainage system.

4. Closeout

● 4.1 Compile project documentation

● 4.2 Conduct final project review
● 4.3 Handover to the City of Montreal
