Title: Oceanscience Floats with Six Inch (15.24 cm) Deck Hatches
Date: February 10, 2016

Abstract
Oceanscience RiverRay and High-Speed Riverboat floats may have an incorrect gasket installed.

Instrument/Program Affected
Oceanscience RiverRay and High-Speed Riverboat floats with six inch (15.24 cm) deck hatches.

6 inch Hatch
6 inch Hatch

This FSB does not apply to Multiple-Profiler High-Speed Riverboats or eight inch (20.32 cm) deck
hatches.

Description
There are two gasket profiles identified that could be installed in the hatch seal, and these may allow water to
seep inside the float. These gaskets are shown as “B” and “C” in the picture below. The left gasket (“A”) in the
picture makes a good, water tight seal. Note the flap on the top – outlined in red.

Solution/Action
Short Term Solution
Inspect the six inch (15.24 cm) deck hatch to determine which type of gasket profile you have. If you do not have
profile “A”, check for any dampness inside the float after each usage and before the next usage. Remove any
dampness that is found. Check the gasket and the lid for any damage or debris.
Long Term Solution
Replace type “B” or “C” gasket with a replacement type “A” gasket (which has a flap). Note the flap points towards
the outside radius of the seal and points upward as shown in the picture above. These gaskets (ORING-6) are
available from Teledyne RD Instruments and/or Teledyne Oceanscience.
