DESCRIBING AND DRAWING PARALLEL, INTERSECTING, AND

PERPENDICULAR LINES USING RULER AND SET SQUARE

I. Learning Competency with Code

Describes and draws parallel, intersecting and perpendicular lines using ruler
and set square.

II. Background Information for Learners

Line can be defined as a straight one-dimensional figure that has no

thickness and extend endlessly in both directions. B
Examples: A
C D

Parallel lines are lines that do not meet. The distance between a pair of
parallel lines is always the same. Intersecting lines are lines that cross each
other. Perpendicular lines are lines that intersect and form square corners.

Example:

Parallel lines

Intersecting lines

Perpendicular lines
H A
J E G
1
C D
I F
K B

Line IH and line KJ do not intersect. They do not meet at any point. They
are parallel lines.
Line E intersects with line G. They form intersecting lines.
Line AB and CD intersect in a special way forming square corners. They
are perpendicular lines.

A ruler and set square can be used to draw parallel lines and perpendicular
lines as described below.

Drawing Perpendicular Lines

Step 1. Draw a straight line using a ruler.

Step 2. Place a set square on the line as shown below.

Step 3. Draw a line along the other edge of the sets square.
Example: Line AB is perpendicular to line CD. We denote this as “AB CD”.

Drawing Parallel Lines

Step 1. Draw a straight line using a ruler.

Step 2. Place a set square on the line as shown below

Step 3. Slide the set square along the ruler and draw another line.
It is indicated by the similar arrows.
Example:

1. Line GH and line KL are parallel to each other. We denote this as
“KL//GH”.
