Being a great leader is all about having a common vision and goals through positive
influence. One of the world’s top leadership thinkers, John C Maxwell defines leadership, “A
leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way.” He or she can prove to
be a difference maker between success and failure. A good leader has a futuristic vision and
knows how to turn his ideas into real- world success stories. Even-though, no leader can ever
achieve anything great or long-lasting all alone. Teamwork goes hand in hand with
leadership. In this article, we take an in-depth look at some of the important leadership
qualities, strengths and impact of her/his leadership in nursing profession that separate good
leaders from a bad one.
The word “leadership” can bring to mind a variety of images such as a political leader, an
explorer, or an executive but a good leader means that they help themselves and others to do
3
the right things. They set direction, build an inspiring vision, and create something new. It is
about mapping out where you need to go to “win” as a team or an organization; and it is
dynamic, exciting, and inspiring. Yet, while leaders set the direction, they must also have
some qualities to lead and quid their people to the right destination, in a smooth and efficient
way. What qualities does a good leader need to display? Many leadership qualities have been
identified that are important to great leaders across time. But there are some specific qualities
of leaders that seem to stand out as being more important that the others (Sherman, 2016).
Most of the time, leaders think about good leadership qualities and how to apply them on a
daily basis. First of all a great leader have a vision. They can see into the future. The leader
have a clear, exciting idea of where they are going and what they are trying to accomplish
and are excellent at strategic planning. This clear vision turns the individual into a special
type of person. This quality changes a “transaction manager” into an “informational leader.”
The quality separate them from managers while a manager gets the job done, great leaders tap
into the emotions of their employees. Other than that, one of the more important qualities of a
good leader is courage that they are willing to take risks in the achievement of your goals
with no assurance of success. There is no certainty in life or business, every commitment you
make and every action you take entails a risk of some kind. Truthfulness is the foundation
quality of the trust that is necessary for the success of any business. Integrity is one of the
qualities that a great leader practice. Integrity requires that you always tell the truth, to all
people, in every situation. Great leaders are those who are strong and decisive but also
humble. Humility means that you have the self-confidence and self-awareness to recognize
the value of others without feeling threatened. This is one of the rarer attributes. It means that
you are willing to admit you could be wrong, that you recognize you may not have all the
answers which many people struggle to do. Another one of the more important leadership
strengths is strategic planning. They have the ability to look ahead, to anticipate with some
accuracy where the industry and the markets are going. Only leaders with foresight can gain
the “firs mover advantage”. Great leaders focus on strengths, in themselves and in others.
Leaders always focus on the needs of the situation. They focus on the strengths of the
organization, on the things that the company does best in satisfying demanding customers in
a competitive marketplace (Hasan, 2017). Your ability as a leader to call the shots and make
sure that everyone is focused and concentrated on the most valuable use of their times.
Leadership is the ability to get people to work for you because they want to. Gain the
cooperation of others by making a commitment to get along well with each key person every
4
single day. Other than that another important trait that the best leaders strive to perfect is the
ability to speak effectively and persuasively. Although talking in front of crowds is a top fear
for the majority of us, conquering this fear is what makes a good leader become a great leader
(Nunnari, 2012).
There for in this assignment, as a writer I choose my ward sister name” Sanisah Adnan”
(syodoname) as my leader in my working place. She is the one that I appreciate and want to
follow.
Most leaders have a few key strengths they can capitalize on to help them along in their
journey. As I mentioned, my ward sister Sanisah Adnan has her own strengths towards her
leadership. As we all know, solid communication skills are a basic foundation for any career.
But for nurses, it’s one of the most important aspects of the job. My admire Sister Sanisah
Adnan, is a great nurse that has an excellent communication skills, especially when it comes
to speaking and listening. Based on team and patient feedback, she is able to problem-solve
and effectively communicate with patient and families. She always make sure that we are
clearly understood what her plan and also able to advocate for other nurses and anticipate our
needs.
She have empathy for the pain and suffering of patients and also her staff nurses. She able to
feel compassion and provide comfort. She knows how to recognize the symptoms and deal
with it efficiently. Sometime we all looks her as our advocates. The softer side of my ward.
Being flexible and rolling with the punches is a staple of any career. My sister is flexible with
regards to working hours and responsibilities. Nurses, like doctors, are often required to work
long periods of overtime, late or overnight shifts, and weekends. She don’t mind to stay back
even though working hours or shift.
She is a great nurse that has excellent interpersonal skills and works well in a variety of
situations with different people. She work well with other nurses, doctors and other members
of the ward because she knows that nurses are the link between doctors and patients. She act
like the glue that holds the ward together. Always has a friendly face and doctors depend on
her to keep them on their toes. She balances the needs of patient, doctor and also staff nurses
as seamlessly as possible.
5
My sister is a small size and thin lady. Even though her outlooks are very small, she is really
very hardworking and physically endurance. Frequent physical tasks, standing for long
periods of time, lifting heavy objects or people and performing a number of taxing
manoeuvres on a daily basis are staples of nursing life. She maintain her energy throughout
her shift, whether she is in a surgery or checking in on a patient. Staying strong, eating right
and having a healthy lifestyle outside of nursing is important too.
Other than that she also can think quickly and address problems as or before they arise.
Whether with sick patients, trauma cases and emergencies or even problem between the co-
staff nurses. She always need to be on hand to solve a tricky situation. Whether it is also
handling the family, soothing a patient, dealing with a doctor or managing the staff having
good problem solving skills is a top quality of herself.
She also respond quickly to emergencies and other situations that arise. She really very
response to sudden incidences and always be prepared for the unexpected.
My ward sister, Sanisah Adnan is a great nurses for me and my colleagues. She follows a
transformational leadership style that creating relationship and motivation among staff
members. She able to inspire confidence, staff respect and communicate loyalty through a
shared vision, resulting in increased productivity, strengthen employee morale, and job
satisfaction (Burns and Frandsen). She is remain impartial at all times and are mindful of
confidentiality requirement and different cultures and traditions.
She is more prefer to pays excellent attention to detail and is careful not to skip steps or make
errors. From reading a patients chart correctly to remembering the nuances of a delicate case,
there nothing that should be left to chance in nursing. For her, when a simple mistake can
spell tragedy to another life, attention to detail, can literally be the difference between life and
death. As a good manner, we can follow her task-oriented leadership style that involves
planning of work activities, clarification of roles within a team or a group of people,
objectives set as well as the continuing monitoring and performance of processes.
Other than that she also encourage us to be a good leader. She give us an opportunity to take
on leadership activities whether other staff practice at the bedside or sit in the boardroom.
Always encourage us with positive words. For example “you must believe that you are
6
capable and fully empowered to provide excellent care and make the changes necessary to
improve ineffectual system”. She support nurses in their efforts. She always help us in every
second through mentoring, educational and skill development opportunities and support
networks.
Years of training and continued specialized education to care for patients in a variety of
settings are called nursing profession. Nurses are a technical expert, an educator, a counsellor
and a resource for the family, using all senses to better care for a patient. Nursing profession
always link with health care system. The World Health Organization (WHO) defines health
system as it consists of all organizations, people and actions whose primary intent is to
promote, restore or maintain health. The health system is therefore more than the pyramid of
publicly owned facilities that deliver personal health services. As the health care
professionals most actively engaged in direct patient care, nurses are positioned to provide
leadership in all heath care areas, including developing system to reduce medical errors,
improving quality, providing better care coordination, increasing access to care and averting
workforce shortages. Nurses play a vital role in transforming the health care system. Nurses
can influence change in health care and if given the opportunity, be drivers of innovation but
to reach their full potential in improving quality and outcomes, enhancing an organization’s
culture and reshaping care delivery, they need strong nurse leaders who are willing to be their
advocates in the C-suite.
There is some ways leaderships can help the nursing profession advance health care delivery.
First of all, the shift to value based care, while necessary is posing a challenge for nurse
leaders who may feel like they have one foot in two boats as they try to manage a dual reality,
the long standing fee for service models still in use plus the outcomes based models that are
increasingly being an adopted. Boston-Leary said that the value based approach to care which
a much needed change is has many challengers for leaders and organizations as we are
making tough changes with declining reimbursement and the financial penalties that come
with it while we continue to care for every sick patients. They are also present an enormous
opportunity for nurse leaders to reshape care by creating new ways to best utilize nurses in
this updated care model. Strategies should not be constrained to providing care within the
four walls, but well outside of that and we should be able to measure impact on outcomes.
7
Other than that, nurse leaders should be taking a proactive approach and creating solutions
that will move nursing and health care into the future.
A strong nurse leaders are willing to advocate for nursing in the C-suite. They can stand with
their finance person, with their CEO, and work to get proper data analytic or IT resources to
better utilize and manage nursing resources. When our front-line nurses are stretched with
managing volume and high acuity, nurses barely have time to perform value-added care that
is meaningful versus what we see today-less critical thinking and largely computer-driven
protocols, which is ‘colour by numbers’ nursing care. Yet in most cases, staffing decisions
are being based on singular data points that are forcing nursing leaders to make decisions that
will hurt their team and will cause them to lose top talent. Nurse leaders need to take the lead
with these types of collaborative strategies with the support of their peers in the C-suite (RN
J. T., 2018).The innovation and taking that entrepreneurial approach and using analytic is
what we need to do in a more proactive way.
A lot of organizations nursing is the largest resource. For impact nurses at the grassroots
level, a leader must be in the table and impact decisions and nurses can come up with
amazing solutions when they have support. Empowerment reveals the goldmine of talent and
innovation you have within your building that we typically don’t take advantage of. As a
leader at the bedside, we impress upon folks when they come in here new to practice. (Danae
F. Sfantou, 2017)
There is no submission. Everyone have a voice, these are your avenues, and we want
everyone to be an innovator. We have a major presentation at graduation that we also turn
into actionable items for change in our organization.
Lastly, there are numerous publications recognizing leadership as a key element for quality of
health care. Effective leadership is among the most critical components that lead an
organization to effective and successful outcomes. Significant positive associations between
effective styles of leadership and high level of patient satisfaction and reduction of adverse
effects have been reported (Wong C.A). A leadership is strongly related to the
implementation of effective management that establishes a culture of patient safety (The
Institute of Medicine). In Addition, empowering leadership is related to patient outcomes by
8
promoting greater nursing expertise through increased staff stability, and reduce turnout
(Houser).
CONCLUSION
Nurses have a history of inspired leadership in Nightingale, who showed what could be
accomplished with vision, conviction and the willingness to Challenge the status. To become
a good leader, you must have good qualities but if you lack some of these qualities, then you
might struggle to make the mark in the world of leadership. A leader have to set a good
example for others to follow. That is where your commitment, passion, empathy, honesty and
integrity come into play. Good communication skills and decision-making capabilities also
play a vital role in success and failure of a leader. Lastly, innovation and creative thinking, as
well as the futuristic vision, are a couple of key traits which make a leader stand out. A
Leader may have many opportunities to lead during her own lifetime. As we learn, the path to
great leadership starts with a deep understanding of the strengths that bring to the table (Tom
Rath and Barry Conchie 2009). Both the health care system and nursing are at a crossroad.
Nursing can and should become a major player in turning the health care system around. At
the end of her life, Florence Nightingale said, “May we hope that when we are all dead and
gone, leaders will arise who have been personally experienced in the hard, practical work, the
difficulties and the joy of organizing nursing reforms, and who will lead far beyond anything
we have done.” Take the words to heart and prepare yourself to contribute to the reforms that
will take place in our lifetime. We have much to contribute.
