USB Programming Pen Installation

This document describes the installation for the McMurdo 82-950 USB Beacon Programming Pen,
and the 82-1012 USB Beacon Programming Pen

It describes installation under Windows 2000 , Windows XP , Windows Vista and Windows 7 32 bit
versions. It should work under Windows Vista 64 bits but has not yet been tested.

Note: The 82-950 USB Programming pen installer uses a Windows “ unsigned” driver. This means
that it will not work with Windows 7 64 bit because of the need for signed drivers with that
operating system.

Note: Because the McMurdo 82-950 USB Programming Pen is a custom item, there are no drivers for
it available via Windows Update.

For Windows 7 64 bit and the 82-1012 USB programming pen, the USB Pen uses generic SI Labs
CP2102 USB drivers.

As they are generic Windows drivers, the Windows Update process may be able to locate these
drivers automatically when the USB pen is plugged in. Otherwise, the driver installation file is
available in the “82-1012 Programming Pen” folder.

The remainder of this document deals with the 82-950 USB Beacon Programming Pen installation
procedure.

If you need to change which COM Port the USB pen is connected as, look at the example in the
Windows 2000 Installation process on page 9

Remove the USB Programming Pen

Locate the file " 82-950 USB Programming Pen\82-950PenInstaller.exe" and double click it.

Provided you have allowed the installer to make changes to the PC, ( the message asking for
permission will report “Silicon Laboratories”, the maker of one of the chips used in the USB
Programming pen) the following dialog will then appear

You can then click Install, if this location is acceptable.

On Windows 7 you will then get this warning message . At present this is because we are using
modified driver installer files from the vendor of the USB chip we use in the programming pen , and
the modified package has not yet been verified by Microsoft.
Click on Install this driver software anyway.

And then the driver installer will ask for you to restart the computer.

You can either restart the PC at this point or remove and reinsert the programming pen to complete
the driver installation.

Eventually you should have the USB Programming Pen device installed and be able to access it from
FPROG2
