The geographically vast Democratic Republic of Congo has a coastline of only ca. 40 km.
Mangrove bio-geography includes coastal lagoons and estuaries, and the northern banks of
the Congo River, second in terms of water discharge and drainage basin size only to
the Amazon. Mangroves extend 70 km inland from the Congo Delta. Avicennia germinans and
Rhizophora racemosa are the dominant species. Some literature sources show dramatic decline
of mangrove coverage, however, it is not clear whether these are real losses, or whether UNESCO-designated sites in The Democratic Republic of Congo
these figures are based on different mapping approaches and definitions. This indicates
the importance of enhanced scientific research into mangrove bio-geography and
socio-ecology, because robust scientific data and maps, based on professional ecosystem
