1. A Steel bar is placed between two copper bars each having the same area and length as
the steel bar at 15°C. At this stage they are rigidly connected together at both the ends.
When the temperature is raised to 315°C, the length of the bars increases by 1.50mm?
Determine the original length and final stresses in the bars. Take ES = 2.1 × 105N/mm2.
Ec = 1 × 105N/mm2, αS =0.000012/°C, αC = 0.0000175/°C.

2. Draw the bending moment and shear force diagram for the simply supported beam shown
loaded as in Fig. 1 below. Mark the maximum bending moment and also determine its value.

3. A rectangular beam 300 mm deep is simply supported over the span of 4 m. Determine the
uniformly distributed load per metre which the beam may carry, if the bending stress should
not exceed 120N/mm2. Take I = 8×106 mm4.

4. Obtain the deflection under the greater load for the beam shown in Fig.2 using the Moment-
area method or double integration method.

5. An element in plane stress at the surface of a large machine is subjected to tresses
σX = 15MPa, σY = 5MPa and τXY = 4MPa. Determine the principal stress and
maximum shear stress.

6. A cylindrical thin drum 80cm in diameter and 3m long has a shell thickness of 1cm.
if the drum is subjected to an internal pressure of 2.5 N/mm 2, determine
(i) change in diameter, (ii) change in length and (iii) change in volume.
Take E = 2 x 105 N/mm2: Poisson’s ratio = 0.25.

7. The cross section of T beam is as follows: Flange thickness = 10mm; width of the
flange = 100mm; thickness of the web = 10mm; depth of the web = 120mm; If a
shear force of 2kN is acting at a particular section of the beam draw the shear
stress distribution across the section8.

8. A uniform metal bar has a cross sectional area of 7cm 2 and length of 18m. With
the elastic limit of 160 MN/m2, what will be its proof resilience? Determine also
the maximum value of an applied load which may be suddenly applied without
exceeding elastic limit. Calculate the value of gradually applied load which will
produce the same extension as that produced by the suddenly applied load above.
