This statement is in response the public comments at yesterday’s City Council meeting as
well as comments made to me privately by residents from BOTH political parties from all
over University Heights since Mayor Michael Dylan Brennan started posting to social media
on November 5, 2024.
Our city charter calls for a nonpartisan city government. The mayor’s Facebook posts
attempt to impose national partisan politics on our bedroom community which is
interpreted by many residents as hate speech and voter Intimidation. No one – not even the
mayor knows who another person voted for. He calls two members of council, including
myself, “MAGA…Trumpies” and correctly states we supported the incumbents for
reelection to City Council. Yes, I supported the incumbents, all of whom are aligned with
the democratic party. How exactly does that fit in with the “MAGA… Tumpie” narrative?
I do not have a Facebook account, nor do I post on social media. However, Residents have
shared numerous times over the past 3 years that when the mayor blocks residents with
differing opinions on social media, they worry may be infringing on their first amendment
rights to freedom of speech. While it may not be the mayor’s intention, Residents have also
shared that the impact they feel is that mayor is interfering and obstructing city government
collaboration.
Many residents in Precincts H and I, who are predominantly Jewish and Jesuit, have stated
that the mayor’s Facebook posts of November 5 and 7, 2024 and more recently, his
remarks and retorts at yesterday’s City Council meeting, makes them feel that they “have a
mayor who is not willing to represent them, their rights, their freedoms, and their free
expression of views.” While this may not be his intent, the impact was made clear at last
night’s City Council meeting whereby Residents poured out with feelings of anger, hurt, and
fear for their safety.
Sadly, the mayor’s language consistently contains dangerous false claims and political
hyperbole, which he has doubled down, and last night tripled down, on after having been
responded to. If perhaps it may not be his intent, the actual impact is interpreted by
Residents as an aggressive attempt to segment our neighborly, diverse community with
divisive language.
However, the number one communication I have received are safety concerns because
Precincts H & I are predominately Jewish and Jesuit, literally target the orthodox community
during a time of significantly heightened security – locally, nationally, and internationally.
Resident put it bluntly when stating, “our community does not feel safe with Mayor Brennan
as a leader.”
No political party should play the “us” vs “them” game…especially when the “them” is a
historically marginalized community. The mayor may not have antisemitic intentions, but
the impact he is having by mentioning and singling out the two orthodox Jewish members
of council is worrisome an inciting when he wrote:
1. Jewish money has persuaded Democratic council members to forego their values
based on being bought out.
2. Using the term “red money” is one of the worst antisemitic tropes
Since I still receive calls – day and night – I made a statement at yesterday’s City Council
meeting with the intention to reassure University Heights residents that I am not
distracted by the recent and ongoing divisive, inflammatory, rhetoric that is
filled with false accusations and double standards, as I continue to advocate
to benefit our city through collaboration, because I believe that working
together is the key to successful outcomes for University Heights.
