PROBLEM 13 – 0448: Three bars are placed end to end (Fig. 1) and overall
longitudinal deformation is prevented by rigid end supports.
The lengths and areas of the bars are given in Fig. 1. The
coefficients of linear thermal expansion are
α1 = 6 × 10–6, α2 = 12 × 10–6 and α3 = 16 × 10–6 per °F.
For the stress range of this problem E1 = 15 × 106,
E2 = 30 × 106 and E3 = 10 × 106 psi.
Find the stress induced in each bar by a fall in
temperature of 50 °F. Find also the movement of points B
and C.

Solution: In this problem, equilibrium of the junctions B and C requires that

N1 = N2 = N3 = N(say)
The bar flexibility coefficients are
f1 = [L1 / (E1A1)] = [20 / (15 × 106 × 3)] = 0.444 × 10–6 in/lb
f2 = [L2 / (E2A2)] = [20 / (30 × 106 × 3)] = 0.333 × 10–6 in/lb
f3 = [L3 / (E3A3)] = [25 / (10 × 106 × 3)] = 0.833 × 10–6 in/lb
The total deformations are
e1 = f1N1 + α1TL1 = 0.444 × 10–6N + 6 × 10–6(– 50)20
e2 = f2N2 + α2TL2 = 0.333 × 10–6N + 6 × 10–6(– 50)20 (1)
e3 = f3N3 + α3TL3 = 0.833 × 10–6N + 6 × 10–6(– 50)20
For compatibility the sum of the three extensions must be zero.
e1 + e2 + e3 = 0
Substitution from equations (1) gives
[.444N + .333N + .833N] × 10–6 + [6 × 20 + 12 × 20 + 16 × 25]10–6(– 50)
=0
or
1.611N – 38,000 = 0
Hence
N = 23,586 lb.
i.e.,
N1 = N2 = N3 = 23,586 lb.
The stresses are
σ1 = (N1 / A1) = [(23,586) / 3] = 7862 psi
σ2 = (N2 / A2) = [(23,586) / 2] = 11,793 psi
(N / A ) [(23 586) / 3] 7862 i
