Passage 1:
One of the seven wonders of the ancient world, the Great Pyramid of Giza was a monument of
wisdom and prophecy built as a tomb for Pharaoh Cheops in 2720 B.C. Despite its antiquity, certain aspects
of its construction make it one of the truly great wonders of the world. The thirteen-acre structure near the
Nile River is a solid mass of stone blocks covered with limestone. Inside are a number of hidden passageways
and the burial chamber for the Pharaoh. It is the largest single structure in the world. The four sides of the
pyramid are aligned almost exactly on true north, south, east, and west – an incredible engineering feat. The
13
ancient Egyptians were sun worshipers and great astronomers, so computations for the Great Pyramid were
based on astronomical observations.
Explorations and detailed examinations of the base of the structure reveal many intersecting lines.
Further scientific study indicates that these represent a type of timeline of events – past, present, and future.
Many of the events have been interpreted and found to coincide with known facts of the past. Others are
prophesied for future generations and are currently under investigation. Many believe that pyramids have
supernatural powers, and this one is no exception. Some researchers even associate it with extraterrestrial
beings of the ancient past. Was this superstructure made by ordinary beings, or one built by a race far superior
to any known today?

Passage 2:
One of the factors in global warming is carbon monoxide. The more carbon monoxide in the
atmosphere, the less the atmosphere is able to clean itself. The result is a warming of the atmosphere, the so-
called global warming, and possibly ozone damage.
Earlier, it was found that carbon monoxide was concentrated in the Southern Hemisphere, and could
be attributed to deforestation. Huge areas of forest and grasslands in South America and Africa have been
burned, putting carbon monoxide into the atmosphere. Recently, however, the Southern Hemisphere has been
found to be clean, while the Northern Hemisphere is more polluted than expected.
The latest research was done during the northern winter. The high levels in the Northern Hemisphere
could be because of this. In winter carbon monoxide is destroyed more slowly. There are also more fires
burned in winter, and possibly industrial processes work harder. It could also reflect the ever-increasing
number of cars on the roads. Optimists hope that the reason why the North has overtaken the South as the
major area of carbon monoxide is that at last the burning has stopped, or at least slowed down.

Passage 3:
A rather surprising geographical feature of Antarctica is that a huge freshwater lake, one of the world's
largest and deepest, lies hidden there under four kilometers of ice. Now known as Lake Vostok, this huge
body of water is located under the ice block that comprises Antarctica. The lake is able to exist in its unfrozen
state beneath this block of ice because its waters are warmed by geothermal heat from the earth's core. The
thick glacier above Lake Vostok actually insulates it from the frigid temperatures on the surface.
The lake was first discovered in the 1970s while a research team was conducting an aerial survey of
the area. Radio waves from the survey equipment penetrated the ice and revealed a body of water of
indeterminate size. It was not until much more recently that data collected by satellite made scientists aware
of the tremendous size of the lake; the satellite-borne radar detected an extremely flat region where the ice
remains level because it is floating on the water of the lake.
The discovery of such a huge freshwater lake trapped under Antarctica is of interest to the scientific
community because of the potential that the lake contains ancient microbes that have survived for thousands
of years, unaffected by factors such as nuclear fallout and elevated ultraviolet light that have affected
organisms in more exposed areas. The downside of the discovery, however, lies in the difficulty of
conducting research on the lake in such a harsh climate and in the problems associated with obtaining
uncontaminated samples from the lake without actually exposing the lake to contamination. Scientists are
looking for possible ways to accomplish this.

Passage 4:
The greenhouse effect is always reported as being a negative consequence of current human lifestyle
practices. However there certainly have been numerous suggestions of positive consequences of the
greenhouse effect.
A slight temperature increase in some of the colder parts of the world may improve conditions for
agriculture and changing rainfall patterns may favor some species over others. However, they do not balance
with overall negative impacts. The social, economic and ecological disorders brought about by such climatic
changes worldwide are projected to greatly outweigh regional benefits.
The impacts of global warming and climate change could become a source of increased tension
between nations and regions. While the developed, industrialized world is responsible for 75% of all CO2
emissions, these impacts will most likely hit hardest upon the poorer, underdeveloped parts of the world. For
example, as sea levels rise countries like Bangladesh will suffer much more from the loss of valuable and
populated lands than European or North American countries, even though they have emitted only a tiny
fraction of the greenhouse gases.
The effect of drowning coastlines could lead to hundreds of millions of climate refugees. Where will
these refugees go? How will they be cared for? Undoubtedly, such a disaster will seriously worsen the already
15
critical refugee problem in the world. A severe disorder of the world's food supplies through floods, droughts,
crop failures and diseases brought about by climate change would lead to famines, wars and civil disorder in
many countries.
1. Which of the following is true according to the passage? (VD)
A. Greenhouse effect brings us more benefits than negative impacts.
B. Greenhouse effect brings us more negative impacts than benefits.
C. Current reports on the greenhouse effect are not accurate.
D. Reports should focus on suggestions of positions consequences of the greenhouse effect.
2. Which of the following will suffer most from the impacts of climate change? (TH)
A. The developed countries
B. The developing countries
C. The countries with valuable and populated lands
D. European or North American countries
3. Why will there be an increased tension between countries? (NB)
A. The developed countries are a source of disasters upon the underdeveloped countries.
B. The developed countries head lots of climate refugees to the underdeveloped countries.
C. The developed countries will suffer more than the underdeveloped countries.
D. The European or North American countries will lose more valuable and populated lands.
4. The word "tiny" in the passage is closest in meaning to ____. (NB)

Passage 5:
Not only does Linda Greenlaw do one of the most dangerous jobs in the world, but also does it
extremely well. She has been described as 'one of the best captains on the entire East Coast' and that, in one of
the leading countries in the fishing industry, is praise indeed.
Linda was born and brought up on Isle au Haut, a tiny island ten kilometers off the coast of Maine,
USA. She fell in love with fishing as a child, and she worked on fishing boats during her summer breaks from
college. Her first opportunity to go on a deep-sea fishing trip came when she was nineteen. Alden Leeman, a
man she'd never met before, hired her for thirty days on his sword-fishing boat. The trip was a success and
eventually, Alden offered Linda her first boat to captain in 1986, which probably made her the only woman
ever to captain a sword-fishing boat.
So, why did she take up swordfishing in the first place? Linda says that not only does she like the way
she feels on a boat, but she also gets passionate about catching a fish. More than anything, she's proud of
being a fisherman, even more so than she is proud of being a bestselling author.
Linda has published four books to date, the first of which, The Hungry Ocean, was top of the New
York bestseller list for three months. In it, Linda tells the story of one fishing trip and narrates the adventures
she experienced on board with her five-man crew, including bad weather, sickness, mechanical problems and,
of course, the fish.
But the world of fish and fishing is a man's world and it's not easy to find a word to describe Linda
Greenlaw. In her own words, she says: "I am a woman. I am a fisherman. I am not a "fisherwoman",
"fisherlady", or "fishergirl"."

Passage 6:
The costs and benefits of global warming will vary greatly from area to area. For moderate climate
change, the balance can be difficult to assess. But the larger the change in climate, the more negative the
consequences will become. Global warming will probably make life harder, not easier, for most people This
is mainly because we have already built enormous infrastructure based on the climate we now have.
People in some temperate zones may benefit from milder winters, more abundant rainfall, and
expanding crop production zones. But people in other areas will suffer from increased heat waves, coastal
erosion, rising sea le more erratic rainfall, and droughts.
The crops, natural vegetation, and domesticated and wild animals (including seafood) that sustain
people in a given area may be unable to adapt to local or regional changes in climate. The ranges of diseases
and insect pests that are limited by temperature may expand, if other environmental conditions are also
favourable.
In its summary report on the impacts of climate change, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate
Change stated, "Taken as a whole, the range of published evidence indicates that the net damage costs of
climate change are likely to be significant and to increase over time.”

Passage 7:
When the new state of Pakistan was founded in 1947, Karachi acted as the capital city. However, it
was difficult for Karachi to remain in this role due to a number of drawbacks such as the climate and the state
of the existing buildings. Rather than try to overcome these drawbacks, the government decided to create a
new capital city. In 1959, a commission was established to investigate the possible locations of this new city.
The advisor appointed to the commission was Dr Doxiadis, a famous architect and city planner.
Dr Doxiadis and his colleagues looked at the various locations. They then produced a report
suggesting two possible areas: one just outside Karachi and the other to the north of Rawalpindi. Both
locations had advantages as well as disadvantages. Which site was it to be?
The choice between these two options was made after consideration of many factors, such as
transportation, the availabilities of water, economic factors, and factors of national interest. Finally, the site
north of Rawalpindi was chosen and on the 24th February 1960, the new capital was given the name of
‘Islamabad’ and a master plan was drawn up. This master plan divided the area into three different sections:
Islamabad itself, neighbouring Rawalpindi, and the national park.
Each of these three sections had a different role. Islamabad would act as the national's capital and
would serve its administrative and cultural needs, whereas Rawalpindi would remain the regional centre with
industry and commerce. The third piece of the plan, the national park, was planned to provide space for
education, recreation, and agriculture.
Today Islamabad is a thriving city of about 1 million people. It offers a healthy a pollution-free
atmosphere, plenty of water, and many green spaces. Guide tree-lined streets, elegant public buildings, and
well-organised bazaars and shopping centres. The new capital is a superb example of good urban planning.

Passage 8:
Herman Melville, an American author best known today for his novel Moby Dick, was actually more
popular during his lifetime for some of his other works. He traveled extensively and used the knowledge
gained during his travels as the basis for his early novels. In 1837, at the age of eighteen, Melville signed as a
cabin boy on a merchant ship that was to sail from his Massachusetts home to Liverpool, England. His
experiences on this trip served as a basis for the novel Redburn (1849).
In 1841 Melville set out on a whaling ship headed for the South Seas. After jumping ship in Tahiti, he
wandered around the islands of Tahiti and Moorea. This South Sea island sojourn was a backdrop to the novel
Omoo (1847). After three years away from home, Melville joined up with a U.S. naval frigate that was
returning to the eastern United States around Cape Horn. The novel White-Jacket (1850) describes this
lengthy voyage as a navy seaman. With the publication of these early adventure novels, Melville developed a
strong and loyal following among readers eager for his tales of exotic places and situations. However, in
1851, with the publication of Moby Dick, Melville's popularity started to diminish. Moby Dick, on one level
the saga of the hunt for the great white whale, was also a heavily symbolic allegory of the heroic struggle of
man against the universe. The public was not ready for Melville's literary metamorphosis from romantic
adventure to philosophical symbolism. It is ironic that the novel that served to diminish Melville's popularity
during his lifetime is the one for which he is best known today.
1. The main subject of the passage is_________.

4. The passage implies that Melville stayed in Tahiti because____________.
A. he had unofficially left his ship B. he was on leave while his ship was in port
C. he had finished his term of duty D. he had received permission to take a vacation in Tahiti
5. How did the publication of Moby Dick affect Melville’s popularity?
A. His popularity remained as strong as ever. B. It caused his popularity to decrease.
C. His popularity increased immediately. D. It had no effect on his popularity.

Passage 9:
Super Size Me is a 2004 film by Morgan Spurlock, in which he documents his experiment to eat only
McDonald's fast food three times a day, every day, for thirty days.
18
Spurlock made himself a short list of rules for the experiment, including an obligation to eat all of the
three meals he ordered. He also had to ‘Super Size’, which means accepting a giant portion every time the
option was offered to him. He ended up vomiting after the first Super Size meal he finished, after taking
nearly twenty minutes to consume it.
After five days Spurlock put on almost 5kg, and he soon found himself feeling depressed, with no
energy. The only thing that got rid of his headaches and made him feel better was another McDonald's meal,
so his doctors told him he was addicted. More seriously, around day twenty, he started experiencing heart
palpitations and one of the doctors detected liver problems. However, in spite of his doctor's advice, Spurlock
continued to the end of the month and achieved a total weight gain of 11kg. His body mass index also
increased from a healthy 23.2 to an overweight 27.
It took Spurlock fifteen months to recover from his experiment and return to his original weight, but
the film also had a wider impact. Just after its showing in 2004, McDonald's phased out the Super Size option
and healthier options like salads appeared on the menu. Unfortunately, McDonald's denied the connection
between the film and the changes, but it is interesting to note how closely they coincided with the release of
the film.

Passage 10:
Climate change has various causes which include both internal and external factors. Internal factors
are part of the climate system itself, while external factors exist outside of it. External factors include
sunspots, variations in the Earth’s orbit, and human activity.
Although some scientists are skeptical about the effect of sunspots on the climate, many believe that
there is a link. Sunspots are regions of the sun that are cooler and therefore appear darker than surrounding
areas. They move through cycles of 11 to 22 years, and some people have used these cycles to predict rainfall
and drought. For example, it has been observed that a drought has occurred in the American Midwest every
20 to 22 years since the 1870s.
A Serbian mathematician in the 1920's first proposed the idea that changes in the Earth's orbit have an
effect on the occurrence of ice ages. Over geologic time scales of thousands of years, the orbit places our
planet at different distances from the sun at a given time of year. Although it has not been proven, some
scientists believe that these changes alter the climate.
Human impact on the planet has increased dramatically since the industrial age began in the 18 th
century. By burning coal, oil. and natural gas, societies have released large amounts of carbon dioxide into
the air. This is, of course, one of the “greenhouse gases" that trap heat in the atmosphere leading to a rise in
global temperatures. Other greenhouse gases include nitrous oxide used as a fertilizer by farmers, and
chlorofluorocarbons used in spray cans.
1. Which of the following would be a good title for the reading?
A. How People Affect the Climate C. The Effects of Climate Change
B. External Factors in Climate Change D. Three causes of Climate Change
2. Why do sunspots appear darker than the rest of the sun?
A. They consist of different gases. C. They have a lower temperature.
B. They have a higher temperature. D. They are in periods of drought.
3. Which word is closest in meaning with the word “dramatically” in the passage?
A. straightly B. instantly C. slowly D. significantly
4. The word ‘This’ refers to_________.
A. natural gas B. carbon dioxide C. oil D. air
5. According to the reading, which of the following is true?
A. Droughts have occurred in the American Midwest every year since the 1870's
B. Changes in the Earth’s orbit have been proven to cause ice ages.
C. Human activities have been altering the environment for many years.
D. People have rarely changed the environment.
Passage 11:
In Southeast Asia, many forests have been cut down to produce timber and to clear land for farms and
industries. The destruction of forests has reduced the living space of wildlife. Much of Asia’s wildlife is also
threatened by over-hunting. Many people kill animals for food or hunt them to sell to zoos, medical
researchers, and pet traders. Because of habitat destruction and over-hunting, many large Asian animals,
including elephants, rhinoceroses, and tigers, have become endangered.
In China, people have cut down most of the forests for wood, which has caused serious soil erosion.
The soil is deposited in rivers and streams, which lowers the quality of the water. The Huang He, or Yellow
River, is so named because the light-colored soil gives the water a yellowish color. The soil has also raised
the river-bed. As a result, the Huang He often floods, causing great property damage and loss of life along its
banks.
1. The word “over-hunting” in line 3 is closest in meaning to _____.
A. hunting too much B. hunting overseas
C. hunting in the highlands D. hunting for wildlife
2. Rhinoceroses and elephants are mentioned as an example of _____.
A. animals attracted to medical researchers. B. large animals kept in zoos.
C. endangered animals in Asia. D. animals traders want to have
3. The living space of wildlife in Southeast Asia _____.
A. is a threat to farmers B. has been reduced when forests are cut down
C. is rebuilt when people destroy forests D. is near farms and industries
4. The Huang He _____.
A. receives soil which betters the quality of water. B. has its name from the color of its water.
C. is a deep river in China D. runs between forests.
20
5. The Huang He often floods because _____.
A. the river is shallow due to the raised river-bed. B. wood is deposited in rivers.
C. water from many streams flows into it. D. of the low quality of the water.
Passage 12:
Trees contribute to their environment by providing oxygen, improving air quality, conserving water,
preserving soil, and supporting wildlife. During the process of photosynthesis, trees take in carbon dioxide
and produce the oxygen we breathe. Trees, shrubs and turf also filter air by removing dust and absorbing
other pollutants like carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide. After trees intercept unhealthy
particles, rain washes them to the ground.
Trees control climate by moderating the effects of the sun, rain and wind. Leaves absorb and filter the
sun’s radiant energy, keeping things cool in summer. Trees also preserve warmth by providing a screen from
harsh wind. In addition to influencing wind speed and direction, they shield US from the downfall of rain,
sleet and hail. Trees also lower the air temperature and reduce the heat intensity of the greenhouse effect by
maintaining low levels of carbon dioxide.
Both above and below ground, trees are essential to the eco-systems in which they reside. Far reaching
roots hold soil in place and fight erosion. Trees absorb and store rainwater, which reduces runoff and
sediment deposit after storms. This helps the ground water supply recharge, prevents the transport of
chemicals into streams and prevents flooding. Fallen leaves make excellent compost that enriches soil.
Many animals, including elephants, koalas and giraffes eat leaves for nourishment. Fruits are eaten by
monkeys, and nectar is a favorite of birds, bats and many insects. Animals also eat much of the same fruits
that we enjoy. This process helps disperse seeds over great distances. Of course, hundreds of living creatures
call trees their home. Leaf-covered branches keep many animals, such as birds and squirrels, out of the reach
of predators.
