UPCOMING EVENT : JAPANESE LITERATURE BOOK MONTH
Fiction by Japanese Women Writers
The JFND Library in Japanese Literature Book
Month is celebrating the writings and novels of
Japanese women authors.
In the early years of the 11th century, Lady
Murasaki Shikibu, a poet and noblewoman at the
Imperial Court in Kyoto, put ink brush to
paper and began writing the tumultuous life of an
imaginary prince called Genji. By the time she was
done, she had written the world’s first novel, The
Tale of Genji.
In the centuries since, Japan has produced more
than its share of female literary pioneers, in
every conceivable genre and style, and that
vibrant tradition can be seen today. *

“Maybe there's a place out there where people whose hearts aren't empty can go on

BOOK’S RECOMMANDATION FOR AUGUST MONTH

The Emissary
Yoko Tawada’s new novel is a breathtakingly light-hearted meditation on mortality and
fully displays what Rivka Galchen has called her “brilliant, shimmering, magnificent
strangeness”

The Honjin Murders

One of Japan's greatest classic murder mysteries, introducing their best loved detective,
translated into English for the first time .

Totto-Chan : The Little Girl at the Window

This engaging series of childhood recollections tells about an ideal school in Tokyo during
World War II that combined learning with fun, freedom, and love.

Hardboiled & Hard Luck

Like twins whose paths diverge dramatically, these two gentle stories share little beyond the
mesmerizing voice of their creator. Yoshimoto once again portrays strong-minded young
women coping with heartbreak, traumatic family fissures, drastic illness, and fatalities.

The Housekeeper & The Profess0r

Yoko Ogawa's The Housekeeper and the Professor is an enchanting story about what it
means to live in the present, and about the curious equations that can create a family.
