Worksheet 4.2
Make a food web
You will need: a ball of string, sticky putty or safety pins, a Sun card, plant and
animal cards, scissors
Work in groups of 10–15. Your teacher will give your group a set of cards to stick or
pin onto your shirt or dress.
Steps
1 The learner who is the Sun must hold the ball of string.
2 The Sun should hold onto the free end of the string and pass the ball to a producer.
3 The producer holds onto the string and passes the ball to a herbivore.
4 The herbivore holds onto the string and passes the ball to an animal that eats the herbivore.
5 Continue passing the ball of string until you have made a food chain.
Cut the string and pass the ball back to the Sun.
6 Repeat steps 2–5 until everyone in your group is holding onto the string and
you have made a food web.
7 a Now imagine that a pesticide kills the insects in the food chains. The insects and all the
animals connected to the insects must let go of the string and leave their food chains.
b Other learners in the web must all pull gently on the string. What happens to the web?
Questions

Help sheet
This information will help you to connect to the right living things in the game:
• The energy for all food chains and food webs comes from the Sun.
• Green plants are producers that use the Sun’s energy to make food.
• The rabbit, snail, locust, caterpillar and beetle are herbivores.
• The snake, cat, eagle, frog and fox are carnivores.
• The rat and thrush are omnivores.
