for exceeding the total word limit.
The report will be split into multiple sections titled as:
System Design Documents (approx. 500 words) – developed using appropriate
tools like UML, ER etc. along-with their description.
Application Development (approx. 700 words) – having screenshots of the
activities performed along-with their formal description
Application Testing (approx. 500 words) – having a test plan with desired and
actual outcomes against each process. Support your evidence with relevant
screenshot and a brief description

Unit Learning Outcomes:
LO1 Use an appropriate design tool to design a relational database system for a
substantial problem.
LO2 Develop a fully functional relational database system, based on an existing
system design.
LO3 Test the system against user and system requirements.
LO4 Produce technical and user documentation.
Assignment Brief and Guidance:
Scenario
Express Mart a new startup provides hypermarket shopping experience to its
customers. They have announced an innovation drive and have invited all
undergraduate students of the city so come up with a database solution for their
hypermarket. The best solution will be implemented and the designer will be given
an incentive of 20% on bill every month.
You a student at TMUC HN Computing program will take part in the drive and come
up with a solution
The basic requirements explained by Express Mart are:
Record of all staff members working in the hypermarket should be available
on the system
Staff Attendance can be marked (either manually or using some gadget i.e
face detection)
Monthly payroll based on staff attendance can be calculated
Item categories
Weekly/Monthly attendance report can be generated
Sale Report for Daily/Weekly/Fortnightly/Monthly and custom can be
generated
Monthly Income and Expenditure report

The requirements are generic yet giving a reasonable context of what is needed but
you are encouraged to come up with a solution which is holistic in nature regarding
a hypermarket.
Being the student of HND Computing and currently studying the Database Design
and Development unit, you have also opted to participate in this event.
As per the instructions from the Department, you will be completing this task in 3
stages.
Stage 1
You will have a thorough discussion with the stakeholders with regards to the user
requirements and their corresponding system requirements. Once your
requirements are identified, you are required to create a comprehensive set of
design documents for an effective relational database application that aligns with
the identified requirements.
Stage 2
You will start developing a comprehensive and secure database application using
MS Access. You should also devise a test plan that would include what are desired
and expected results of the application.
Once the application development is complete, you should use some sample data
set of your own choice and test the system for compliance with the user and
system requirements and evaluate its effectiveness in this regard along-with any
improvement recommendations.
Stage 3
Once the system testing is complete, you will compile your report for final
submission to client, and should include every necessary detail that may be needed
by the client for meeting any current or future requirements.
