Question 1 The post-oce will accept only packages for which the length plus the girth

(distance around) is no more than 350 cm. Thus for the package in the gure, the requirement

means

(a) Will the post-oce accept a package that is 50 cm wide, 20 cm deep and 200 cm long. How

about the package that is 43 cm wide, 43 cm deep and 180 cm long?

(b) What is the greatest acceptable length for a package that has a square base whose side

length is a third of the length of the package.

Question 2 Find the domains of the following functions. Express the domains in set notation.

x p
(a) f (x) = 2 (b) g(x) = x2 − 2x − 8
2x + x − 1 r
x 2 3 4
(c) h(x) = √ + (d) t(x) = − −1

r9 − x 2 x+1 x−1 x
1 + 3x 1
(e) m(x) = (f ) s(x) = √
x−2 x − 5x2 + 4

Question 3 Solve the inequalities.

x2 − 2x + 1 1 1 2
(a) ≤0 (b) + <
x3 + 3x2 + 3x + 1 x x+1 x+2
1 1 2x (1 − x)2 √
(c) + ≥ 2 (d) √ ≥ 4 x(x − 1)
x−3 x+2 x +x−2 x

Question 4 One method for determining the depth of a well is to drop a stone into it and then

measure the time it takes until the splash is heard. If d is the depth of the well (in meters) and

t1 the time (in seconds) it takes for the stone to fall, then d = 21 gt21 , where g = 9.81 2
m/s . Now if

t2 is the time it takes for the sound to travel back up, then d = 343t2 because the speed of sound

is 343 m/s.

(a) Calculate the total time t1 + t2 in terms of d.

(b) How deep is the well if the total time is 5 s?

Question 5 Solve the following problems.

(a) A cell phone company charges a monthly fee of $10 for the rst 1000 text messages and

10 cents for each additional text message. Miriam's bill for text messages for the month of

June is $38.50. How many text messages did she send that month?

(b) Jack invests $1000 at a certain annual interest rate. He also invests another $2000 at an

annual rate that is one-half percent higher. If he receives a total of $190 interest in 1 year,

at what rate is the $1000 invested?

(c) Helen earns $7.50 an hour at her job. If she works more than 35 hours in a week, she is

paid 1 21 times her regular salary for the overtime hours worked. One week her gross pay

was $352.50. How many overtime hours did she work that week?

(d) A man is walking away from a lamppost with a light source 6 m above the ground. The

man is 1.81 m tall. How long is the man's shadow when he is 10 m from the lamppost?

(e) It took a crew 2 h 40 min to row 6 km upstream and back again. Given that the rate of

ow of the stream was 3 km/h. What was the rowing speed of the crew in still water?

Question 6 Given the line l : x + 2y = 2 in the xy -plane.

(a) Find the radius r of a circle centered at the origin that is tangent to the line l.

(b) Find the equation of the line parallel to l and tangent to the circle found in (a).

Question 7 You have a $50 coupon from the manufacturer that is good for the purchase of a

cell phone. The store where you are purchasing your cell phone is oering a 20% discount on cell

phones. Let x be the regular price of the cell phone.

(a) Suppose only the 20% discount applies. Find a function f that models the purchase price

of the cell phone as a function of the regular price.

(b) Suppose only the $50 coupon applies. Find a function g that models the purchase price of

the cell phone as a function of the sticker price x.

(c) If you can use the coupon and the discount, then the purchase price is either (f ◦ g)(x)
or (g ◦ f )(x), depending on the order in which they are applied to the price. Find both

(f ◦ g)(x) and (g ◦ f )(x). Which composition gives the lower price?

(d) Suppose that the store oers the best purchase option possible. Find the inverse h of the

function representing the purchase option.

(e) Find h(1000). What does your answer represent?
