Complex Engineering Problem (CEP)

Subject: Manufacturing Processes, Semester: 3rd

Session: 2023 Instructor: … Dr Azhar Hussain…..

Problem Statement/Scenario:
Machining is a vital manufacturing process; it is performed on almost all the components except
nearnet shape cast components. Product life cycle, manufacturing and operational economics are
linked with machining.
For this reason you are asked to cut a stepped shaft of 2” diameter starting from material of your
own choice.
You are requested to design your machining process for maximum production rate and minimum
machining Cost.
Whereas the materials to be removed from the surface of specimen will be greater than 3 mm and
final tolerance is ±.0025mm and surface roughness .08um.

Activities to be performed and reported.

● From the statement select machine tool and make an assumed drawing of stock and final
shape.
● Apply rough cutting and final machining.
● Material Identification and its importance.
● Machine tool/machine tools selection and tool choice for each machine.
● Cutting parameters (RMR) selection wrt engine horsepower available and analysis.
● Choice of cutting parameters and rationale in terms of quality, vibration, cost etc- u may use
arbitrary values or comments in tabular form.
● Estimation of tool life.
● Consideration of vibration and chatter. Constructing a diagram for safe speed selection for
machine tool
● Choice of cutting Fluid for machining.
● Conclusion
