Lesson 1: Photography, Film and Animation


Photography is a valuable tool for communication
 Good photography is not just about clicking on the camera, it requires
training and experience to consistently capture a good photograph
TWO CHARACTERISTICS OF GOOD PHOTOGRAPHY
 Eye-catching – a photograph to be considered good should capture the
viewer’s attention
 Punchline – a detail that makes people react whenever they view the
photograph
AVENUES IN THE FIELD OF ARTISTIC PHOTOGRAPHY
Fine Arts Photography – focuses on using photographs as artworks
Portrait Photography – a specialization that focuses on taking pictures of
persons in their studios or on location
Scientific Photography – a record of scientific or medical data or events using
photography
News Photography or Photojournalism – use of photographs to tell the news
Glamour Photography – designed to sell products
NOTABLE FILIPINO PHOTOGRAPHERS
George Tapan (b.1949)
 well-known travel photographer who has won several awards. Self-
taught photographer who shot his first image as a youngster in his
birthplace of Agdangan, Quezon, earned two Pacific Asia Tourism
Association (PATA) gold prizes and first place in 2011
 an award-winning travel photographer who has won two Pacific Asia
Tourism Association (PATA) Gold awards, an ASEAN Tourism Association
award, and a 2011 National Geographic Photography contest
 it all started when he submitted “Into the Green Zone” — a
breathtaking shot of a rainbow on the horizon of the clear blue sea —
to National Geographic and won. After this life-changing event, Tapan
has continued to amaze others with his photos, making him the legend
that every photographer aspires to be
 His photos have been used in many campaigns such as the
Department of Tourism’s campaign “It’s More Fun in the Philippines.”
John K. Chua (1949-2018)
 John K. Chua, one of Philippine advertising’s most enduring, and most
beloved, photographers, lost his battle to colon cancer last January 7,
just a couple of weeks shy of his 70th birthday.
 He founded the foundation called “Photography with a Difference”
(PWD) that gives free workshops to children with special needs
 One of the first studios in the country to use digital photography
 A licensed pilot for light planes
MOTION PICTURES
 a series of pictures projected on a screen in rapid succession with
objects shown in successive positions slightly changed so as to
produce the optical effect of a continuous picture in which the objects
move
HISTORY OF FILMS
 the first films were in black and white
 in the 1930s, color was introduced to movies with cartoons and later
with live-action movies
 in the 1940s, televisions were starting to sprout, they started creating
television movies
 in the 1980s, Sony developed digital cinematography that captures
events and scenes and stored them in electronic format
STAGES IN FILM PRODUCTION
 a film is a collaborative effort that requires people from different
disciplines to work together to be able to make a film
SIX STAGES OF PRODUCTION
Development – the stage where ideas for the film are discussed
Treatment – what writer writes to describe the story, the mood of the film,
and its characters
Preproduction – the phase where the director is hired as well as the cast
and the crew
Production – where the film shooting happens
Post-production – where the visual effects and musical scores are added
Distribution – the final phase of film production where the film is released
to the cinemas
FILIPINO FILM MAKERS
Brillante Mendoza
 born in July 30, 1960 in San Fernando, Pampanga
 studied Advertising Arts at the University of Santo Tomas
 his works are staple in film festivals all over the world and are
continually recognized like Thy Womb where he again won Best
Director in the Asia-Pacific Screen Awards in 2012
 his film Takub was also selected to be screened in the 2015 Cannes
Film Festival in the Un Certain Regard section
 in 2014, he was knighted by the French government for his talent and
uplifting the quality of Philippine cinema
Maryo J. de los Reyes
 born in October 17, 1952 in Sta. Cruz, Manila
 a member of the Philippine Educational Theater Association (PETA) also
a professor at UP
 some of his recognized works include Alab ng Lahi (1983), Sinungaling
mong Puso (1992), and Magnifico (2003)
Laurice Guillen
 both an actress and director, born in 1947 and first worked in the
industry as an actress
 her career was guided by Lino Brocka, her director for Tinimbang
Ngunit Kulang
 she made her first debut in 1983
 she won Best Director for the filming Sa ‘Yo Lamang in the 9 th
Gawag Tanglaw Awards
ANIMATION
 the art of sequencing drawings or static images together to achieve
the illusion of movement or life
Storyboards – strip-like drawings
In-betweeners – the ones in charge of filling up the rest of the movement
Computer animators – the ones who create images using computers
Stop-motion animators – use dolls and puppets with movable joints to
create the film

PHILIPPINE ANIMATION HISTORY AND ANIMATORS


Philippine Animation-Studio Inc.
 has been making cartoons since 1991
Toon City
 also known as Morph Animation Inc.
 started in 1993 by Colin Baker
Animation Council of the Philippines
 not a studio but an organization of animators
 aims to promote the skills and talents of Filipino animators
throughout the world
 provides classes and training programs

Aerial Photography
 the taking of photographs from an aircraft or other airborne
platforms.
Landscape Photography
 commonly involves daylight photography of natural features of
land, sky and waters, at a distance—though some landscapes
may involve subjects in a scenic setting nearby, even close-up,
and sometimes at night.
Photojournalist
 able to provide further context to stories being reported on.
These photographs can make a story more tangible and provide
further depth to an article. They can also be stand-alone pieces
giving further insights into events or other newsworthy moments.
