1. OBJECT AND FIELD OF APPLICATION

This technical specification defines the required technical instructions and characteristics, the required
performance or reliability levels and the corresponding tests for approval and reception of nuts or other
parts with similar functions.

It applies to nuts: - with a nominal diameter less or equal to 39 mm,

- with a nominal height greater than or equal to 0,5 d,
- with a triangular ISO thread.
These parts will be screwed and do not contain any built-in brakes.
Nuts subject to special use (e.g. welding) are not affected by this technical specification, unless the
drawing or the standard defining the part expressly refers to this document.

2. GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

The general requirements for realizing and supplying the products are described by the following two
inseparable contractual standards:

2.1. STANDARD N° 00.10.415: "... GENERAL REQUIREMENTS"

(Contains the obligations and responsibilities of the supplier during the realization and the
supplying of the products.)

2.2. STANDARD N° 00.10.4415: "... APPROVAL AND ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS"

PART 2. ADDITIONAL GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
(to standard N° 00.10.415 and common to the technical specifications.)
These general requirements apply in their entirety to the present technical specifications, unless
stated otherwise in writing, especially in the section "Special requirements" below. This section
supplements these two standards in accordance with the specific needs for approval and the
considered product reception.

3. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

3.1. PRODUCTS MANUFACTURING

3.1.1. Nut drawings

In addition to the prescribed designations in standards 00.10.415 and 00.10.4415, the drawings
shall contain:

• reference to the current technical specification,

• all the necessary dimensions and their tolerances, or the reference to a standard,

• the property class of the material,

• the protection and the reference to the corresponding standard (standard 01.71.4002, etc),
• the indication left-hand thread, if that is the case.

3.1.2. Manufacturing method

The supplier decides the manufacturing method for the parts, on condition that the parts are
produced in accordance with the technical specifications, standards or drawings, and within the
tolerances specified in the said document.

3.2. PROPERTY CLASS SYMBOLS

3.2.1. Nuts with a nominal height ≥ 0,8 d

Nuts with a nominal height ≥ 0,8 d (useful thread height ≥ 0,6 d) are designated by a number indicating the
maximum property class for screws or studs with which they may be mated.

MATED SCREW
PROPERTY CLASS

(≤
6 6.8 All diameters
8 8.8 All diameters
10 10.9 All diameters
12 12.9 All diameters

NOTE: Nuts of superior property class can generally replace nuts of inferior class. This applies
particularly if the screw/nut assembly shall be submitted to a stress greater than the yield
stress or the proof load.

3.2.2. Nuts of nominal height ≥ 0,5 d and < 0,8 d

(effective thread height ≥ 0,4 d and < 0,6 d)
These nuts are designated by a combination of two digits:

- the first one is always equal to 0. It indicates that the load capacity of this type of assembly is
reduced,

- the second corresponds to a hundredth of the tensile strength in MPa during the proof load
test.

The table below shows the designation system and the stresses when proof load testing these
nuts.

3.3. MARKING OF PARTS

3.3.1. Property class marking

Hexagon nuts with a nominal diameter ≥ 5 mm shall be marked for the property class 05, as well
as for the property classes ≥ 6.

This marking shall be made either by indenting on one side or on the bearing face of the nut, or
by embossing on the chamfer (see examples below). The marking must never exceed the
bearing face of the nut, nor may it hinder the assembly, or weaken or affect the appearance of
the nut.

3.3.3. Manufacturer’s identification marking

All products where the property class marking is mandatory are marked with the manufacturer’s
identification symbol.

The packaging shall always be marked.

3.4. USED STEEL

The steel grades are not specified. The choice is left to the manufacturer, who is responsible for
guaranteeing the characteristics specified in this document.

The grades shall comply with the mandatory tests prescribed in section "TEST PROGRAM".

The choice shall be reported to RENAULT V. I.

Sulphur, lead, and sulphur-lead free-cutting steel are only tolerated for property classes 6 and 8
on condition that the manufacturer can guarantee that there are no defects such as lines,
cracks, etc. If segregations appear, they must neither affect the appearance nor the strength of
the part.

3.5. PROTECTION

The delivered parts shall comply with the order.

The parts delivered without any protection coating shall be slightly lubricated with anticorrosive
oil in order to avoid all corrosion during transport and storage (2 month before the assembly).
This oil shall be easily removed and shall not interfere with any subsequent protection.

NOTE: If an operation might entail embrittlement by introduction of hydrogen on sems nuts, regardless
of the property class of these nuts and on nuts with property class 12, it is necessary to apply
the standards 01.71.001 and 01.71.4002 scrupulously.

3.6. FRICTION CHARACTERISTICS

Unless otherwise stated on the drawing, the overall friction coefficient values of the coated parts
as per standard 01.71.4002 shall comply with those made in standard 01.50.005.

4. TEST PROGRAM

Note: As additional test to the ones specified in this document might prove necessary, RENAULT V.I.’s
technical department reserves the right to modify or supplement this technical specification at any time.

4.1. DIMENSION AND TOLERANCE CONTROL

The parts shall comply with the standards or drawings approved by the technical department.

Form defaults such as clearances, inaccurate perpendicularity of the bearing face in proportion
to the thread axis, and inaccurate concentricity can be allowed on condition that their values
remain within the fixed tolerances on the drawing and in standard 01.20.001.

If nothing related to the thread is indicated, tolerance class 6 H shall be selected as per standard
01.30.4010. The thread checking is made after the coating if this is prescribed.

The thread checking is made in accordance with standards 01.30.017 and 01.30.018.

4.2. HARDNESS TEST

The hardness is measured with the VICKERS method on the bearing face, or on the sides of the
nut if necessary.

VICKERS hardness test shall be considered as a reference test;

if possible, use F ≥ 98 N.

It is always good to make sure that the indications of the hardness indentation are not falsified
by important heterogeneous structure or work hardening, resulting in differences in the hardness
between sections of the same part. Grinding or polishing prior to performing the hardness
indentation should be made without heating.

The values obtained shall conform to the values indicated in appendix 1 in this document.

4.3. PROTECTION CONTROL

The control is carried out in accordance with the valid standard documents.

4.4. FRICTION ABILITY TEST (control of the torque/tension relation)

The test is carried out in accordance with standard 01.50.005. This applies to parts whose
protection complies with standard 01.71.4002.

4.5. MECHANICAL TESTS

4.5.1. Proof load test

A nut’s tensile strength is determined by fitting it on a threaded and hardened mandrel as shown
in the figure below.

The minimum proof load is obtained by multiplying the tensile strength with the nominal stress
area of the corresponding external thread:

π  d2 + d3  2
As =  
4 2 

where: As = area subjected to stress,

d2 = nominal pitch diameter,

d3 = nominal core diameter.

4.5.2. Crushing test

A 5% reduction of the width across flat shall be possible without rupture or apparitions of marked
lines.

4.6. METALLOGRAPHIC EXAMINATION

With a micrographic examination one can check:

• that the steel is clean (no inclusions),

• that it is free from serious defects such as bar lines, quench cracks, etc.

Steel structure:

The quenching and hardening conditions (temperature, duration and quenching environment)
shall lead to a complete transformation of the metal for treated parts.

The micrographic examination must not reveal a percentage of free ferrite > 5 %.

The heat treatment processes shall not lead to superficial decarburization, or excessive case
hardening or cyaniding.

Acid attack:

The absence of lines and surface defects are verified after an attack for 5-15 minutes by a
hydrochloric acid solution 50 % by volume heated to a temperature of 75° C to 90° C.

4.7. DECARBURIZATION AND RECARBURIZATION CONTROL

4.7.1. Definitions

Decarburization:

Lack of carbon on the surface of ferrous (steel) materials.

Partial decarburization:

Decarburization corresponding to a sufficient loss of carbon to cause a slight decolouration of

the martensite and a notable diminution of the hardness compared to the surrounding base
metal.

Complete decarburization:

Decarburization corresponding to a complete loss of carbon in order to make a ferrite border

visible for a metallographic examination.

Recarburization:

Procedure for increasing the surface content of carbon in comparison to that of the base metal.
RENAULT V.I. N° 39 02 4202 / A
© RENAULT V.I. Page 12/15

4.7.2. Examination

A longitudinal section of the nut threading is examined micrographically. The section plan shall
be at a distance ≤ a 10 of the diameter, compared to the thread axis.
th

The micrographic longitudinal section shall be polished, and then attacked by an acid nitric
alcohol solution.

4.7.3. Decarburization

If the examination reveals an impoverished carbon area with thickness t < 0,05 mm, the part is
accepted. If t > 0,20 mm, the part is rejected.

For the intermediary cases (0,05 mm ≤ t ≤ 0,20 mm), the microhardness chain method is used
by taking the hardness in the threads (∆2) at 0,12 mm from the top (for the pitch < 1,25 mm) or
at 0,15 mm from the top (for the pitch ≥ 1,25 mm) and at the bottom (∆1).

The result should be: ∆1 - ∆2 < 25 HV 0,3.

4.7.4. Recarburization

If the heat treatment in controlled atmosphere or in salt bath leads to a surface hardening, it
shall not cause any brittleness in the threading or on the bearing face during the proof load test
or other tests which might prove useful.

The depth of the cyanide or carburized layer is measured in section and microhardness in a
micrographic examination. The thickness shall not exceed 0,3 mm at radius for a diameter > 10
mm and 0,2 mm for a diameter ≤ 10 mm (carbon distribution area) The measured hardness
shall not be higher than 380 HV 5 or 420 HV 0,3 on one section (420 HV 5 or 420 HV 0,3 for
non-electrolytic coating).

4.8. CHEMICAL COMPOSITION

The chemical composition of the steel can be checked.
