CYLINDER

PRESENTATION
Cylinder Facts
• It has a flat base and a flat top

• The base is the same as the top

• From base to top the shape

stays the same

• It has one curved side

• It is not a polyhedron as it has a curved

surface
CONE
Cone Facts
It has a circle at one end
And a point at the other end
And a curved side
It is not a polyhedron as it has a
curved surface
Cone
A cone can be made by rotating a
triangle!
The triangle is a right-angled triangle,
and it gets rotated around one of its
two short sides.
The side it rotates around is the axis of
the cone.
Right vs Oblique Cone

When the apex is aligned on the

center of the base it is a Right Cone
otherwise it is an Oblique Cone:
Surface Area of a Cone
The Surface Area has two parts:

The Base Area = π × r2

The Side Area = π × r × s

Which together makes:

Surface Area = π × r × (r + s)
Surface Area of a Cone
Example: h = 7 and r = 2
Surface Area of Base= π × r2
= π × 22
= 4π
≈ 12.57
Surface Area of Side= π × r × √(r2+h2)
= π × 2 × √(22+72)
= π × 2 × √(4+49)
= 2π√(53)
≈ 45.74
Total Surface Area ≈ 12.57 + 45.74 ≈ 58.31
Volume of a Cone

Volume = 1/3 π × r2 × h
Volume of a Cone
Example: h = 7 and r = 2
Volume= 1/3 π × r2 × h
= 1/3 π × 22 × 7
= 283 π
≈ 29.32
SPHERE
Sphere Facts
It is perfectly symmetrical
All points on the surface are the
same distance "r" from the center
It has no edges or
vertices (corners)
It has one surface
(not a "face" as it isn't flat)
It is not a polyhedron
Surface Area of a Sphere

Surface Area = 4 × π × r2
Surface Area of a Sphere

Surface Area = 4 × π × r2
Volume of a Sphere

Volume = (4/3) × π × r3
Volume of a Sphere
Volume = (4/3) × π × r3
Example: r = 5
Volume= (4/3) × π × r3
= (4/3) × π × 53
= (4/3) × π × 125
≈ 524
TORUS
Torus Facts

It can be made by revolving a

small circle (radius r) along a line
made
by a bigger circle (radius R).
It has no edges or vertices
It is not a polyhedron
Surface Area of a Torus

Surface Area
= (2πR) × (2πr)

= 4 × π2 × R × r
Surface Area of a Torus
Example: r = 3 and R = 7
Surface Area= 4 × π2 × R × r
= 4 × π2 × 7 × 3
= 4 × π2 × 21
= 84 × π2
≈ 829
Volume of a Torus

Volume
= (2πR) × (πr2) = 2 × π2 × R × r2
Volume of a Torus
Example: r = 3 and R = 7
Volume= 2 × π2 × R × r2
= 2 × π2 × 7 × 32
= 2 × π2 × 7 × 9
= 126 π2
≈ 1244
