SPEECH
STYLE
According to Dutch Linguist,
Martin Joos (1976), Speech Style refers to
the form of language that the speaker
uses which is characterized by the
degree of formality.
In his book, The Five Clocks
(1962), he identified the styles, which he
called ‘clocks,’ in five classes such as
frozen style, formal style, consultative
style, casual style, and intimate style.
INTIMATE SPEECH STYLE
This style is private and is used for very close
relationships such as between a husband and wife,
parents and children, between siblings or best
friends.
INTIMATE SPEECH STYLE
❑The participants share a completely private
vocabulary and may not be shared in public.

❑ Endearments such as ‘darling’, ‘honey’, ‘babe’, etc.

are used in this speech style.
INTIMATE SPEECH STYLE
Examples:

❑ a couple talking about their future plans

❑ a family sharing ideas

❑ a heart-to-heart talk between siblings

CASUAL STYLE
❑ This style is an informal communication between
groups and peers who have something to share and
have shared background information but do not have
very close relations.

❑ In this style, nicknames are used and interruptions

are common.
CASUAL STYLE
❑ Informal contractions are used (e.g., ‘ain’t’,
‘dunno’, ‘gonna’, etc.)

❑ The languages used among and between friends or

peers who share common interest are jargon,
slang, colloquial, and vernacular.
CASUAL STYLE
Examples:

❑ talking to a stranger

❑ everyday conversation with friends

❑ giving last-minute instructions to players

WHO ARE THE PERSONS
INVOLVED IN THAT SOCIAL
SITUATION

?
CONSULTATIVE STYLE
❑Considered as the most operational style among
the other styles where a speaker needs to provide
background information because the listener or
addressee may not be able to understand the
message without it.
CONSULTATIVE STYLE
❑Feedbacks like “I see”, “Uh-huh”, “Ah”, “Okay” are
used by the listener to signal that he or she is
paying attention to the speaker.

❑This style is used in semi-formal and standard

communication in a two way participation.
CONSULTATIVE STYLE
Examples:

❑ doctor-patient consultation

❑ inquiring at a hotel

❑ a talk between a student and a teacher

WHAT IS THE SOCIAL SITUATION
ILLUSTRATED?
FORMAL STYLE
❑ This style is one-way straightforward speech.

❑ The speaker uses formal words and expressions like

complete sentences and technical vocabulary.

❑ This style does not allow omissions, truncations and

contractions.
FORMAL STYLE
❑Unlike the consultative style, formal is one way-
speaking to medium, or larger groups.

❑This speech style is evident in conferences and

inaugurations.
FORMAL STYLE
Examples:

❑ State of the Nation Address

❑ delivering news report

❑ announcements, welcome addresses

FROZEN
❑This style is “frozen” in time and remains
unchanged.

❑It uses prescribed and highly formal language,

such as in official, or historical documents and
literary texts.
FROZEN
❑Most formal style and is reserved for very formal
situations such as in ceremonies, religious
services, state affairs, and court proceedings.
FROZEN STYLE
Examples:

❑Preamble to the Constitution

❑Lord’s Prayer

❑Wedding vows

malls.
Harry: You know what, I have a brilliant idea! We can stroll around this Saturday.
