Final Paper Assignment Instructions

The final assignment is due at 23:59 PM on August 14th (Wednesday) and should be submitted on
KUHubLearn.

You are required to select one of the provided questions below and compose a 3-4 page essay, double-
spaced, which equates to approximately 1,000 words (excluding footnotes). It is crucial to reference the last
two books we read, namely Annie Ernaux’s The Years and Orhan Pamuk’s The Museum of Innocence
regardless of the question you choose to answer.

The format for the assignment should meet these guidelines:

- 3-4 pages
- Times New Roman 12 pt. font
- 1-inch margins
- Approximately 1000 words (no less than 1000, no more than 1750 words)
- Double-spaced
- No cover sheets required
- Include a title
- Use the "I" pronoun in the first person
- Citations: Footnotes, endnotes, or in-text citations are all acceptable
- No outside research is necessary, but you may use other required and recommended readings posted on
KUHubLearn for each novel
- It is highly recommended to include quotations from both novels and other readings. Direct quotations
do not count towards the 1000-word count
- Submit it on KUHubLearn by the due date

Please note that submitting plagiarized or AI-generated content will result in a failing grade (F).

Question 1:

Please select a “keyword” (agency, motherhood, female subjectivity, patriarchy, homosociality,

transformation, autofiction, etc.) that ties the major themes in Annie Ernaux’s The Years and Orhan
Pamuk’s The Museum of Innocence together and write an essay that analyzes how the keyword you
selected runs through the theme of each novel.

For example: How do these two novels speak to each other? Are there any common themes or conflicts
shared by these novels? How do these themes and conflicts correspond to one another? Do you recognize
any common or distinct patterns in character development, plot structure, the relationship between the tone
and mood? Do these novels reinforce or undermine patriarchal ideology? Are there any common power
relationships that these novels describe, reflect or embody? You do not need to answer every single question
in this paragraph, but they can guide you craft your essay. I expect you to make a reference to Annie
Ernaux’s The Years and Orhan Pamuk’s The Museum of Innocence

Question 2:

I was listening to the podcast series "Public Books 101", which has recently launched an entire "season"
(comprising five episodes) on the topic of the novel, hosted by Nicholas Dames and featuring such guests
as Jay Baruch, Elif Batuman, Teju Cole, Merve Emre, Rishi Goyal, Garth Greenwell, and Leah Price. I
would like to take your opinion on one of the questions they addressed in the series.

“Can a novel meaningfully help us understand the pain that we and others endure, or does reading fiction
inspire little more than navel-gazing [navel-gazing: useless or excessive self- contemplation]?” Please
elaborate with reference to Annie Ernaux’s The Years and Orhan Pamuk’s The Museum of Innocence.
