Notes Turning Effect of Forcese
• If an object can rotate around a fixed point on the object, then a force will produce a turning
effect or also known as moment of force.
• Moment of force= Force x Distance (perpendicular distance between force and pivot)
• Examples: Force on door knob and it turns the door around hinges.
Force is applied on a spanner to turn and open a nut.
• Identify in both examples that force applied at larger distance from pivot create larger
Turning effects.
• Opening a door with a handle close to the pivot would be much harder, and would require a
lot more force.
• If clockwise moment on an object equals anticlockwise moment on the same object then
object is said to be in equilibrium.
Stability is the ability of an object to maintain its original position even after
being disturbed.
Wider base area (Object will topple when line of weight lies out of base)
