R/ Watching violent movies can impact children's attitudes toward violence, making them more
likely to show aggression toward friends and siblings, leading to increased overall aggression.

2. What kinds of programs and movies are most harmful?

R/ Some of the most detrimental programs include violent video games, intense action series, and
aggressive cartoons, all of which can negatively influence young viewers.

3. According to the article, some studies show that viewing violence can have effects that

last for many years. What are some of these long-term effects?

were more prone to show aggressive behavior by age 18. Additionally, as adults, they had a

higher likelihood of being convicted of violent crimes, including child abuse and murder.
4. What bad “message” can come from violent programs and movies?

R/ The harmful message children receive is that there are no consequences or punishments for
wrongdoing. When they watch fictional characters who commit crimes, they start to believe that
making bad choices is acceptable. For developing children, this is a negative influence, as it’s
important for them to understand that society does not tolerate criminal behavior.

5. What suggestions does the article make to help parents prevent the bad effects of violent

TV programs and movies in very young children? In older children?

R/ To protect young children, we can control the TV shows and movies they watch to shield them
from violence. However, with older children, it’s difficult to completely avoid exposure to violent
content. Instead, we can try to limit their screen time. Additionally, after watching a violent show
or movie, it's crucial to discuss it with them, helping them understand that violence is not a
normal part of life.

WRITING

Write two paragraphs about violence in movies and on TV. Explain why some people

think it's harmful and why others think it isn't.

The portrayal of violence in cinema and television has long intrigued me, eliciting a range of
opinions. Many argue that its representation can be harmful, especially to young audiences. They
contend that frequent exposure to violent acts can desensitize viewers and normalize aggressive
behavior. Studies indicate that such exposure can distort our perception of reality, making the
world appear more dangerous than it actually is.

On the other hand, I believe that violence in fiction can serve as a powerful tool for examining the
complexities of human nature. Supporters of this view argue that these representations reflect
social realities and provide a means for critique or emotional release. The ability to differentiate
between fiction and reality enables audiences to engage with these portrayals contextually. For
me, violence in cinema and television transcends mere entertainment; it presents an opportunity
to address and discuss significant societal issues.
