Drugs
Drugs can be define as a chemical substance used in the treatment, cure, prevention and
diagnosis of disease/illness also to enhance physical and mental wellbeing.
Uses
 Treatment of disease
 Prevention of disease via vaccine and immunization
 Diagnosis
 Relief from pains
Drug Abuse
Drugs unlike food is a controlled substance. When controlled substances are used in a
manner or amount inconsistent with the legitimate medical use, it is called Drugs Abuse
How and ways drugs can be abused
 Through Self-therapy which may include
(i) Taking a valid medication without prescription or medical supervision.
(ii) Combining drugs.
(iii) Sharing prescriptions with other or using someone else prescriptions.
 Through route of administration
(i) Taking drugs via unconventional method such as snorting, injecting or
smoking.
 Through concurrent use of drug.
(i) Taking drugs for longer period than intended.
 Taking drugs more than the prescribed dose or frequency.
 Taking drugs for a purpose other than its intended use
Causes of drugs abuse
 Environmental factors
(i) Family dynamics and upbringing
(ii) Peer pressure and social influences.
 Psychological factors:
(i) Depression

Effect of drug abuse on individual
 Physical health problem:
(i) Organ damage (liver damage , kidney failure, heart failure)
(ii) Increase risk of disease and infection like Cancer and HIV respectively
(iii) Malnutrition and weight loss

(ii) Hallucinations
(iii) Memory loss
(iv) Increased risk of suicide
