Text for no 1 - 3

Being on time is a beautiful social ethic and one of great

importance, as it creates efficiency in systems and implies respect for
one another. However, it is one of the many values that is not easy for
our students to learn.
Inner discipline, one that comes from an understanding of the set
rules and regulations, is the highest form of behavior. Most excellent
schools try to instill this with a loving environment. Why, even adults
arrive late to meetings, work, etc. Here, we do not agree that late comers
should be shut out. They can be given warnings, most of which are
enough to make them try their best to reach the school on time later. If
this fails, invite their parents to school.
By closing the gates, the school is behaving cruelly, to which we
prefer not to expose our children. Every school has a responsibility to
implant good educational principle, but it should be in appropriate ways.
Good schools create competitive students who can organize themselves
effectively in society, so that everyone gets a quality life as a result of
ethics and values learned for as long as 12 years.
Children are precious and dependent on adults for guidance.
Understanding them is the key, and to this end, both parents and
schools must work hand in hand without playing the blame game

1. What should the school do if a student can’t stop his/her habit to

come late to school?
A. Punish him/her
B. Shut him/her out
C. Fail him/her
D. Talk to his/her parents
E. Try to understand him/her
2. What does the writer think to be “the highest form of behavior” (in the
second paragraph)?
A. Respect for one another
B. Not being late to school

E. Inner discipline

3. “Children are precious and dependent on adults for guidance.” The

word “precious” is closest in meaning to ….
A. Valuable
B. Excellent
C. Clever
D. Innocent
E. Unimportant

Text for no 4 - 7

There are a lot of discussions as to whether children should be

given homework or not. Some people claim that children do enough
work in school already. They also argue that children have hobbies that
they want to do after school, such as sports or music. A further point
they make is that a lot of homework is pointless and doesn't help the
child learn at all.
However, there are also strong arguments against this point of
view. Parents and teachers argue that it is important to find out whether
children can work on their own without the support from the teacher.
They say that the evening is a good time for children to sit down and
think about what they have learned in school.
Furthermore, they claim that the school day is too short to get
anything done that needs doing and it makes sense to send home tasks
like independent reading or further writing tasks that don't need teacher's
support.
On balance, I think that some homework is a good idea but that it
should only be given at the weekend when children have more time.

A. Students should not be given any homework

C. Homework should be given at the weekend

homework is unnecessary

the fourth paragraph does not
D. The second paragraph and the fourth paragraph argue that
students do not need homework
E. The second and the fourth paragraphs do not say anything about
the benefit of homework.

6. “A further point they make is that a lot of homework is pointless and

doesn’t help the child learn at all.” (Paragraph 2). The underlined word
has the same meaning with….
A. Uninteresting
B. Unimportant
C. Difficult

Should performance enhancing drugs be accepted in sports?

The issue of using drugs to enhance athlete’s performance is

controversial. Those who agree with the use of drugs in enhancing
performance say that most top players in all sports take drugs to train
harder and feel no pain during play. The trainers, sports doctors,
nutritionists, physiotherapists, and managers of the big names make
sure banned substances are taken at the safest and most efficient
levels. The main effect of banning such substances has turned
performers and their coaches into liars and cheaters.
On the other hand, some still believe that performance enhancing
drugs in sport should be banned. Performance enhancing drugs are not
only prohibited because they violate the spirit of sport but because they
can damage the health of athletes.
I think the idea of allowing them in sports could lead to a situation
whereby sportsmen and women are used as human guinea pigs for a
constant flow of new, unregulated substances.

16. According to the proponents of performance enhancing drugs, the

effect of banning them is that performers become ....
A. Losers
B. Winners
C. Cheaters
D. Supporters
E. Valuable
17. What argument is given by those who disagree with the use of
performance enhancing drugs?
A. Athletes health is badly affected
B. Guinea pigs are awfully needed
C. Athletes consume more drugs
D. Athletes obey the rules
E. Athletes perform better

18. What is the writer’s intention to write the text?

A. To persuade readers to agree with the issue
B. To influence readers to oppose the issue
C. To describe performance enhancing drugs
D. To entertain readers with the issue
E. To expose readers with the issue

19. How does the writer feel about performance enhancing drugs?
A. Neutral
B. Positive
C. Negative
D. Indefinite
E. Pessimistic

Government should not raise fuel prices to solve the problem of

economic issues. People were affected severely with the high fuel price
like last year. Obviously they cut their spending. As an example, they
had to buy lower quality rice or palm oil. There were also fewer buyers of
secondary commodities like flour, or canned meat or fish.

Furthermore, the condition of low income family will become even worse
because their expenses will increase while their salaries will not. Many
companies will have to trim the number of employees because they are
incapable of managing, buying or selling price, standard wages and

Students’ cheating is one of the biggest problems faced by

teachers nowadays. Despite the fact that teachers advise their students
not to do dishonest acts during tests, some students still do cheating.
There are many kinds of cheating that students do during the test or
examination, such as looking at other students’ work, putting some notes
under their clothes, writing notes or formulas on their desks, making
hand signals or going to restrooms to get the answers from their friends.
In my view, students who do cheating are committing a crime. It is
a sort of taking something illegally. This crime causes negative results to
the students. Students who always cheat deteriorate their mental
capacity. Cheating acts also create dependence. They weaken their self
confidence. Instead of preparing for the coming test, they are busy
organizing notes on a piece of paper. If this awful habit continues, the
students will lose their opportunity to develop their intellectual and mind.
Therefore, schools should consider cheating as a very serious
problem. School board and administration should go hand in hand to
overcome this matter. Honesty must be put in school’s vision. Harsh
punishment must be applied to students who commit this crime

There are many reasons for both sides of the question, "Should we have
printed advertisements?" Many people have strong views and feel that
ads are nothing more than useless junk mail, while other people feel it is
important source information.

There are some reasons why we should have advertisements in

newspapers and magazines. One reason is that ads give us information
about what is available. Looking at ads we can find out what is on sale
and what is new in the market. This is an easy way of shopping. Another
reason is the advertisement promotes business. When shop owners
compete against each other the buyer saves money, more people come
to their shops and they sell more goods.

On the other hand, some people argue that ads should not be put in
newspapers and magazines for these various reasons. Firstly, ads cost
the shopkeepers a lot of money to print onto paper. Also some people
don't like finding junk mail in their letter boxes. Ads also influence people
to buy items they don't need and can't really afford. Ads use up a lot of
space and a lot of effort has to be made to make the ads eye-catching.

After looking at both sides of the issue, I think we should not have
advertisements because they cost a lot of money and take up a lot of
