TECHNOLOGY AND THE ABILITY TO USE A PENCIL

1 When you go out to a restaurant or spend some time in a shopping centre, you will definitely
see young children playing with their parents’ mobile phones or tablets. Parents seem to be
happy about this situation as they can comfortably eat or shop.

2 A new study, however, showed that the latest technology is affecting children’s ability to use
a pencil or pen negatively. Researchers say that, these days, children spend so much time
on tablets or mobile phone screens that they cannot hold a pencil correctly. Children are
rarely using pencils nowadays, so they don’t have enough muscle strength in their hands to
be able to write words or sentences properly when they start school.

3 Researcher Dr Sally Payne said: “Children who are not coming into primary school with the
hand strength suffer a lot in the following years. Each of these children is given a pencil at
school, but regrettably not all are able to hold it because these kids don’t have the essential
movement skills.”

4 The researchers also said: “We wish families would use technology more carefully and
efficiently. Unfortunately, they don’t, and this is the reason why such problems are occurring
in primary school.”

5 Some specialists say technology may be causing even bigger problems. One expert said: “If
a child isn’t physically strong enough to hold a pencil, that means their whole body is weak.”
She said: “It is better for children’s physical development to climb trees and play in the mud
than to watch YouTube videos.”.

D. Underline the words or phrases which tell you when the actions happen?

Last month, my parents went on a holiday for 5 days. I was alone at home, and I did
not want to do any household chores, so the house was a complete mess. There were
dirty dishes in the kitchen sink, dirty clothes on the bathroom floor, I did not even
throw out the rubbish. I thought I could clean everything before they come back, so
there would not be any problem. 2 days later, I saw my father’s car in the driveway.
As soon as I realized they were back, I started to clean the house. However it was too
late. The moment my mother entered the house, she started to scream. I apologised
and tried to calm her down. When I cleaned everything, she was comforted. She said
she will never leave me alone at home again until I learned how to take care of myself.
