Introductory Message
This Self-Learning Module (SLM) is prepared so that you, dear learners, can
continue your studies and learn while at home. Activities, questions, directions,
exercises, and discussions are carefully stated for you to understand each lesson.
Each SLM is composed of different parts. Each part shall guide you step-by-step
as you discover and understand the lesson prepared for you.

What is It
Different tempos in a composition like “Kalesa” contribute greatly to its meaning and
make it more interesting and enjoyable. “Kalesa” is an original composition of Levi Celerio
and Ernani Cuenco which was inspired by the old mode of transportation of Filipinos long
before the cars, jeepneys, and buses were introduced.
There are different elements in music, and one of those is tempo. Tempo comes
from the Latin word “Tempus ”, which means “ time “. It refers to the pace or speed of a
piece of music. Tempo gives beauty and life to a song. It also gives the expression of a
song or the feeling or emotions. Fast tempos are associated with feelings of energy,
happiness, and excitement, while slow tempos are connected with a solemn, lyrical, or calm
mood.

Below are the different kinds of tempo and their meanings. Just like dynamics, tempo
are also written in Italian terms.
