SERVICE REPORT
Ship Name Eurocargo Ravenna Date 30/09/2024
Hull No. HMD8052 Port of Visit Malta (multiple visits)
Engine Type M/E 9L60MC-C Work Commenced 08/09/2024 (first visit)
Customer Grimaldi Euromed Work Finished 20/09/2024 (last visit)

Purpose of Visit

As per the agreement with Grimaldi Euromed Spa, the Jobson Italia service team conducted
multiple visits to the Eurocargo Ravenna at the Palumbo dry dock, Malta. The primary objective
was to assess the general condition of the vessel's main engine, type 9L60MC-C, during a series of
inspections.
Our team made two service visits focusing on the following tasks:

1. Crankcase Inspection – Conducting feeler gauge-based inspections of the main bearing, crank-pin
bearing, crosshead bearing, and thrust bearing. Additionally, a visual assessment of shaft protection,
the bottom end, and related accessories was performed.

2. Scavenge Port Inspection – This involved a visual inspection of the piston rings and CL grooves.
Furthermore, cylinder liner wear was measured for all engine units using a LDM (liner Diameter
measurements).

Description

• First visit

1. September 07, 2023 – Main engine running hours: 68225

- Clearance measurements were taken for the crosshead bearing, crank-pin bearing, main
bearing, and thrust bearing for all units.

- For detailed data sets, refer to Annex 1 of this report.

- Camshaft Visual inspection photos are in Annex 1.

2. September 10, 2023 – Main engine running hours: 68225

- Measured vertical clearance of piston rings, including CL grooves and CPR.

- Refer to Annex 2 for corresponding data.

- Pistons visual inspections photos are in Annex 2.

- Chain, cathodes visual inspection photos are in Annex 2

3. September 12, 2023 – Main engine running hours: 68225

-endoscopic inspection was performed for all combustion chambers of all units.

- Photos are in Annex 3

• Second visit

4. September 17, 2023 – Main engine running hours: 68225

- Cylinder liner wear was measured for all units using LDM.

- Detailed results are in Annex 4 of this report.

Relevant outcomes of the visits are as follows:

✓ All measurements of the crosshead, crank-pin, and main bearings are within acceptable tolerances

✓ Thrust bearing clearances were found to be within permissible limits

✓ Combustion chambers were found in good condition.

✓ Air cooler found in order

✓ Non-Return Valves found in order

✓ Chain and related wheel found in order and tightened.

✓ Cathodes were found in good condition

✓ Cylinder liner wear is within permissible limits, with wave-cut machining marks still visible and no
significant signs of abrasion.

✓ Vibration damper data showed that it operates within normal data.

No leakage was found in exhaust valves of all units. Except exhaust valve of units N. 1 and N. 2 failed leak
down test and should be overhauled.

 Piston Ring (Ring 2) was found collapsed of the piston of unit N.5

RECOMMENDATIONS

➢ Crosshead Bearings: With engine hours at 68,225, exceeding the expected 64,000 service life, we

recommend frequent visual inspections (to check for material fragments) and regular clearance

measurements every 2-3 months. Current measurements indicate residual life in the crosshead

bearings.

➢ Thrust Bearing: Clearance remains within acceptable limits; no immediate action is required.

➢ Cylinder Liners: Current wear is below expected service life hours, and no abnormal wear patterns

were detected. However, it is advised to conduct further cylinder condition checks via scavenge

ports, with wear measurements recommended within the next 12 month

Conclusion & Recommendations
The endoscopic inspection of the combustion chambers in units 9, 5, and 4 revealed small oil spots on the

walls of the liner. These minor oil spots are not unusual and do not indicate any significant mechanical or

operational issues. Based on the current findings, there is no immediate cause for concern.

1. Monitor the units regularly: Continue routine inspections to ensure there is no further increase in oil

leakage or any signs of deterioration.

2. Check oil seals: Consider inspecting the condition of the oil seals and rings during the next scheduled

maintenance to ensure they are functioning properly.

3. Review oil quality: Ensure the oil used is within the required specifications and that the lubrication system

is functioning optimally.

No urgent action is required currently, but ongoing monitoring is advised.

Cylinder liners wear measurement with LDM tool
All liners have the same running hours as the engine, 68225. Generally, inspected

cylinder liners found in good condition without any signs of hard contact marks.

Only visual inspection of the liners and pistons/rings were performed during

measurement. Just major issues will be mentioned below.

Cylinder liners wear have been measured with LDM tool. According to measured wear,

liners can be sorted in following groups:

Conclusion & Recommendations

✓ All units’ measurements are acceptable

Wear on above listed units found well below permissible limits. Maximum measured

wear was 1.84 [mm] on unit #5, what is very good in respect of running hours.

According to manual (Operation, Ch. 707), maximum permissible wear of the cylinder

liner lay within interval from 0.4% to 0.8% of the nominal diameter, means from 2.4

to 4.8 [mm] for this engine bore. Wear rate of up to 0,03 [mm/1000 RH].

As the wear of a cylinder liner is within acceptable limits, the following recommendations can help

optimize performance and prolong the lifespan of the engine:

✓ Monitor Wear Rate

- Regularly inspect the cylinder liner for wear using specialized tools (e.g., a micrometer or bore

gauge) to ensure wear remains within acceptable limits.

- Check for ovality and taper, which could indicate uneven wear.

- Compare measured values with manufacturer specifications for maximum allowable wear.

✓ Optimize Lubrication

- Use the correct type and grade of lubricant recommended by the engine manufacturer.

- Maintain sufficient oil film thickness by ensuring proper oil pressure and flow.

- Regularly replace oil filters to avoid contamination of the lubrication system, which can

accelerate wear.

✓ Maintain Cooling Systems

- Ensure the cooling system is functioning properly to avoid overheating of the cylinder liner,

which can cause thermal stress and accelerate wear.

- Check for proper coolant circulation to prevent localized overheating.

✓ Ensure Proper Combustion

- Maintain fuel injectors to prevent improper spray patterns, which can cause hot spots on the liner

and increase wear.

- Regularly inspect and clean air filters to ensure proper air intake and reduce the risk of abrasive

particles entering the cylinder.

✓ Control Piston Ring Wear

- Ensure that the piston rings are in good condition and seated properly against the cylinder liner to

prevent excessive friction.

- Regularly inspect for ring scuffing or breakage, which can damage the liner.

✓ Maintain Correct Operating Conditions

- Avoid excessive idling, which can lead to poor lubrication at low speeds and increase wear.

- Operate the engine at recommended load levels to avoid undue stress on the liner.

✓ Regular Maintenance and Inspections

- Follow the manufacturer’s maintenance schedule for overhauls and inspections.

- Address early signs of wear, such as excessive oil consumption, power loss, or abnormal noise,

promptly.

These practices will help maintain the cylinder liner in good condition and prevent premature wear

even if the current wear is within acceptable limits.
