Dear Student,
BYU4301/BYE4301 – GENETICS & EVOLUTION 2021/ 2022
BYU4301 is a level 4 course conducted by the Department of Botany, during the first
semester of the academic year.
Printed Material
The printed material includes the following.
1. Unit I - Genetics
2. Unit II – Evolution
3. Practical Manual
You can collect the above material on the day you register for the course.
Practical Component
The course includes a compulsory practical session spreading over 2 ½ days and a Moodle
component. Practical classes are conducted in Colombo, Kandy, Matara, Anuradhapura and
Jaffna.
After registration you can choose your practical group by online registration. Any changes in
practical groups are possible only by mutual consent between you and your colleagues. Please
contact the coordinators for such changes.
Day Schools
Five (05) day schools including an Introductory Day School, three Day schools and a Revision
Day School have been planned to cover the printed text. Please send the questions that you
would like to discuss in each day school, in advance of the dates indicated in the timetable of
academic activities of the course.
One Continuous Assessment Test (CAT) will be held online and the other one
will be onsite
NBT – 17th July 2022 - 9.00-10.00 am - Unit II (OS)
OBT – 4th September 2022 - 9.00-10.00 am - Unit I (OL)
Practical Sessions
Assessments
Your progress would be assessed by means of three Assessment Tests (OBT, NBT and
Practical Test each of 1 hour duration) and a Final examination. The Practical Tests will
be held at the end of each practical session.
In order to be eligible to sit the final examination, you must satisfy the following
requirements.
• At least 80% attendance at the practical session.
• Submission of well completed practical records before the deadline.
• Minimum of 30% for the practical Assessment and minimum of 35% of
OCAM
OCAM = 30% of the Practical Assessment Mark + 50% of the Higher Mark of the
NBT or OBT + 20% of the other Mark of the NBT or OBT
Final Examinations
Final Examination consists of a theory paper of 02-hour duration.
Question paper consists of Part A and B, each having 03 questions.
You are expected to answer (04) questions selecting at least one (01) from each part.
