    Islam Research Assignment

    Below are three topics for further research. Your instructor will assign the topic to you.

    1. Ramadan: What is it? Why do Muslims celebrate it? How long does it last?
    Ramadan is the 9th month of the Islamic calendar. Muslims observe Ramadan as a month
    of fasting. Muslims fast to remember the first revelation of the Quran to Muhammad. The
    month lasts 29-30 days.
    2. Pilgrimage: Where do they go? Why is it important? What events take place during
    the Pilgrimage?
    Muslims pilgrimage to Mecca. Mecca is the holiest city for Muslims. Pilgrimage events
    include a series of rituals meant to symbolize their unity with other Islam believers and
    they pay tribute to Allah. The end of the pilgrimage ends with Eid al-Adha,, the Festival
    of Sacrifice.
    3. Mawlid al-Nabi: What is it? When is it celebrated? Why do Muslims celebrate it?
    Why do some NOT celebrate it?
    Mawlid al-Nabi is the prophet Muhammad’s birthday. Many Muslims celebrate his
    birthday to honor his memory. Some Muslims do not celebrate his birthday because they
    believe this holiday to be an innovation or new practice. They argue that there is nothing
    in the Quran about celebrating Muhammad’s birthday.
