White lights by fyodor dostoveosky

On the first night of *White Nights*, the dreamer is wandering the streets of St.
Petersburg, feeling lonely as usual. He’s a quiet, introverted man who spends
most of his time daydreaming about a better life. While walking, he notices a
young woman, Nastenka, sitting on a bench, crying. Concerned, he approaches
her.
At first, Nastenka is a bit wary, but the dreamer’s kindness and politeness make
her feel comfortable. She tells him a little about herself, and they begin to talk.
The dreamer is captivated by her, not only because she’s beautiful but also
because she represents something real in his otherwise imaginary life.
As they talk, they form an instant connection. They agree to meet again the next
night, and for the first time in a long while, the dreamer feels a spark of hope and
excitement. He starts to imagine that his life might change because of this
encounter. The first night sets the stage for what will become an emotional and
bittersweet journey for the dreamer.

On the second night of *White Nights*, the dreamer and Nastenka meet again as
promised. This time, Nastenka opens up more about her life. She explains her
situation—she lives with her strict grandmother, who keeps her on a short leash
and even sews her dresses to her own clothes to stop her from leaving the house.
Nastenka’s life is very controlled, and she craves freedom and love.
Nastenka tells the dreamer about a man she fell in love with. He was a lodger
who lived in her grandmother's house for a while. They became close, and he
promised to marry her. But when he left the city to pursue his career, he said he
would come back for her in a year. Nastenka has been waiting ever since, but he
hasn’t returned or written to her.
As Nastenka tells her story, the dreamer listens, growing more and more in love
with her. However, he also realizes that her heart belongs to someone else.
Despite this, he offers to help her, showing his selfless nature. The second night is
filled with emotional sharing, and it deepens their bond, though the dreamer
starts to see that his love for Nastenka may remain one-sided.

On the third night of White Nights, the dreamer and Nastenka meet again, and
their conversation continues to deepen. Nastenka is anxious because she hasn’t
heard from her former lover, and she’s beginning to lose hope that he will ever
return. As they talk, the dreamer’s love for Nastenka grows even stronger, but he
keeps it hidden, knowing that her heart still belongs to someone else.
During this meeting, Nastenka becomes emotional and questions whether her
lover truly cared for her or if he has forgotten her. The dreamer tries to comfort
her, encouraging her not to give up hope. He assures her that her lover will
return, even though deep down, he wishes she could forget about him and love
him instead.
At one point, Nastenka even suggests that if her lover doesn’t come back, she
might end up with the dreamer. This moment gives the dreamer a spark of hope,
but he knows it’s only a possibility, not a promise.
The third night is bittersweet for the dreamer—he’s closer to Nastenka, but he’s
also painfully aware that he is not her first choice. He’s torn between helping her
and wishing for her love, which creates a deep emotional tension.

On the fourth night in *White Nights*, the dreamer and Nastenka meet again. By
this point, the dreamer has fully fallen in love with her, and there's a sense that
Nastenka is starting to develop feelings for him too. She tells him that if her old
lover doesn't return, she will be with him instead, hinting that they could have a
future together.
The dreamer is overjoyed by this possibility. He starts to imagine a life with
Nastenka, filled with happiness and companionship. For a brief moment, it seems
like his dreams might come true.
But just as this hope is building, everything falls apart. During their conversation,
Nastenka receives a letter from her former lover, who promises to come back to
her. When he finally does, she runs to him, leaving the dreamer behind. She
thanks the dreamer for his kindness and promises to always be grateful to him,
but her heart clearly belongs to someone else.
The fourth night is a mix of hope and heartbreak. The dreamer briefly believes
that he might get the love he desires, only to have it taken away at the last
moment when Nastenka chooses her former lover. This night marks the turning
point where the dreamer’s dreams are shattered, and he is left in emotional ruin.

Despite the dreamer’s deep emotional investment and hope for a future with Nastenka, the reality of
her returning to her former lover leaves him heartbroken. The novel underscores the bittersweet
nature of human relationships and dreams—the dreamer finds joy and meaning in his brief
encounters with Nastenka, but ultimately faces the harsh truth of unrequited love and the
inevitability of returning to his solitary life.
