7 Iconic
Jamiroquai
Bass Lines
Scott Devine & Ian Allison

From Stuart Zender’s groundbreaking bass work to the

disco-inspired bass lines of Nick Fyffe and Paul Turner,
the Jamiroquai bass chair has long cast a spotlight
on emerging stars from the UK bass scene. And the
deeper you dive into the band’s history, the easier it is
to see why.

In this lesson, we’re breaking down Jamiroquai’s most

famous bass lines – and showing you exactly what
makes them true genius.

A little history
Jamiroquai’s 1993 debut album served to highlight Stuart
Zender’s funky and syncopated bass lines on tracks like
Too Young to Die and the title track, Emergency On Planet
Earth. Over the next three years the group released a
further two albums, The Return of the Space Cowboy and
Travelling Without Moving. Yet disputes over writing and
production credits led to a series of confrontations that
would ultimately lead to Stuart’s departure.

With Jamiroquai’s fourth studio album, Synkronized, already

under way, Nick Fyffe was drafted in to record parts in the
middle of Stuart Zender’s departure. By the group’s 2001
album, A Funk Odyssey, Fyffe was firmly established as the
band’s bassist.

After Fyffe’s departure in 2003, the band recorded with a

succession of ripping bassists including Alex Meadows,
Randy Hope-Taylor, and Derek McIntyre. When it came time
to tour, none of them were available, so leader Jay Kay held
a bass audition. One who got the call - and ultimately the
gig in 2005 - was Paul Turner.

Turner made his debut on two tracks from the compilation

album High Times: Singles 1992 - 2006 adding to the bass
lines laid down by Stuart Zender and Nick Fyffe. Turner
had also joined right at the beginning of the promo run for
2005’s Dynamite album, and has been a mainstay in the
group ever since.

Deeper Underground
A seriously funky bass line - played on synth, but eminently
suitable for bass guitar and a combination of effects. This is
one of those occasions where the synth bass line can actually
benefit from being doubled by a bass guitar for a richer sound
and more groove factor. Work it out a phrase at a time and
slowly link it all together - it ain’t easy!

Travelling Without Moving - V1

We particularly like Paul Turner’s use of slap bass here. The
opening breakdown section has few surprises other than some
upper octave patterns, but it’s effectively just you and the
drums, so keep it tight, and with a nice bounce to the groove.
Also watch out for the subtle ghost notes.

Travelling Without Moving - V2

The album of the same name reflects the band’s early
trademarks of funk/jazz with big productions combined with
open breakdowns that usually highlighted Stuart Zender’s
fingerstyle flair. Try a little bass and treble boost, and pluck the
strings about 3 inches from the bridge for a good combination
of depth and definition.

Light Years
Stuart Zender did so well on this track, showing a confident
player well in command of that lower register. Never stuck
for an idea, he pulls off some surprising tangents throughout.
Zender had only been playing bass a few years when he joined
Jamiroquai - how he managed a track like Light Years after such
a short time is anyone’s guess.

Don’t Give Hate A Chance

The third single from Jamiroquai’s sixth studio album, Dynamite,
saw the late Derrick McIntyre drafted in to play bass. The track
is held together by McIntyre’s funky octave patterns, really very
‘70s in flavour. This is quite a busy pattern, so don’t attack the
notes too hard.

Runaway
Paul Turner’s bass line on Runaway is a perfect blend of pocket
playing, tasty fills and amazing tone. We particularly like Paul’s
use of the fingerboard here, ranging from the 8th fret down
to the low F - your position changes have to be quick and
accurate.

Black Capricorn Day

The final single from Synkronized is quite simplistic in structure
and variation, but there is nothing simple about the groove and
feel of bassist Nick Fyffe. The main riff has a perky, mid-tempo
bass line that sits irresistibly in the pocket, before the main
hook makes way for an even funkier middle section. Be sure to
nail the staccato phrasing throughout each variation.
