Cross-section method
S
Find the volume of a solid S where each z y
cross-section perpendicular to the x-axis
A( x)
at x has area A( x). a x b x

1) Divide S into thin slabs with thickness

x1, x 2 ,..., x n along the x-axis.
Approximate each slab by a prism.
2) The volume of the kth prism is
Vk =A(x*k )x k .

Example: Find the volume of the right circular cone with
height h and base radius R.
Solution
O
Set up the Ox axis such that O is at the cone vertex
and Ox goes through the center of the base.
r

circle with radius r, so its area is A( x)   r 2 .

Example: Consider a solid whose base is the region
bounded by y=1-x, y=2x+5, x=0 and x=3.
If the cross sections (perpendicular to the x-axis)
are squares, set up an integral to find volume.
Solution
Let A(x) be the area of the cross-section at x,
b

L then the volume V is computed by  A( x)dx.

a

The cross-sections are squares, so A(x)=L2 .

L is the segment joining two points (x,y=1-x) and (x,y=2x+5). So,

L=(2x+5)-(1-x)=3x+4
3
The volume of the solid is V=  (3x  4) 2 dx.

Solids of revolution
A solid of revolution S is obtained by revolving a planar
region about a line.
Method of washers
Find the volume of a solid S obtained by revolving a region D
between the curves y  f ( x) and y  g( x) on [a,b] about the x- axis.
1) Divide D into thin trips with width
x1, x2 ,..., xn along the x-axis.
Approximate each strip by a rectangle.
