INTRODUCTION
Project "Upgradation & Four laning of Poanta Saheb - Ballupur Section Of NH-72 in the State of Himachal Pradesh and
Uttarakhand under NH(O) on Hybrid Annuity Mode" has been awarded to the executing agency M/s Ram kumar
Contractor. The executing agency has engaged M/s Samprisha Consultants and Civil Mantra Infracon Pvt., Ltd as
structural design consultants for detailed design of all structures in this project
The project consists of construction of 2 new Major bridges, 12 new Minor bridges & 2 widening of existing minor
bridges, 1 VUP and 2 LVUPs. There are 16 culverts to be reconstructed, 14 culverts to be widened and 2 new culverts
to be constructed in this project
The major bridge at Ch: 3+029 is 1175m long, the span configuration of which is 27 x 40.185m + 1 x 20m + 1 x 70m
with two independent decks of 12.5m each. The overall width of the major bridge is 25.50m. Both decks are supported
on common substructure (Recto - circular pier and Post tensioned pier cap) and well foundation. The structural
configuration of superstructure of initial 27 spans are devided into 9 modules of 3 x 40.185m with deck continuity.
Each module constitues of Post tensioned I girder with in-situ deck slab. Elastomeric bearings are provided to transfer
vertical/lateral loads from superstructure to the substructure.
Piers P1 to P7 are provided with well foundation and from P8 to P26 are with pile foundation. The bridge has
longitudinal gradient and thus the pier heights are different. This design note presents the design of pile foundation
and pier of maximum height i.e. for Pier P20.

The calculation of DL, SIDL and LL is presented in subsequent pages. The loads are calculated based on superstructure
and substructure dimensions. Various combinations of Live Loads as per table 6A of IRC:6-2017 are considered in the
design. The substructure/foundation is design for 3 Lanes ignoring footpath as per the clause 7.2 of IRC: SP: 84-2014.
The effects of wind forces are calculated as per clause 209 of IRC:6-2017.
Response reduction factor, R = 1 has been considered for the design of substructure/foundation. The structural design
of pier section (both ULS & SLS) is performed using In-house developed worksheet for all possible Seismic and Non-
Seismic load combinations. The stress in steel in SLS combinations falls within the permissible limits as specified vide
table 12.2/12.3 of IRC: 112-2020, the crackwidth check is deemed to be satisfied.
For calculating BM in a pile corresponding to unit lateral force, a single pile is idealised in StaadPro software. The pile is
restrained by spring supports (Modulus of subgrade reactions) whose values are adopted as mentioned in the Geotech
report. The pile foundation is designed for various load combinations of dead load, Superimposed dead load,
carriaeway live load, wind load as per the provisions of IRC: 6-2017. The structural design of pile sections are done as
per relevant provisions of IRC:112-2020.
The structural design of pier & fondation are performed in accordance with IRC:112-2020 with appropriate load
factors as per IRC:6-2017 for respective load combinations
