MODULE NAME:WATER SUPPLY ENGINEERING.

MODULE CODE:CET 0108

TUTOR NAME:ENG NYANDA PAUL.

NAME OF STUDENT: NGURU OTHMAN KING

REGISTRATION NO:NS1665/0080/2021

TYPE OF WORK: INDIVIDUAL ASSIGNMENT.

NTA LEVEL:06

DATE OF SUBMISSION:4. NOVEMBER. 2024.

1.What is meant by water supply system?

A water supply system is a network of engineered infrastructure that collects, treats, and
distributes water to consumers.

2.What are types of water supply systems, Describe them.

 Indirect Water Supply System:

Water is first stored in a tank (usually on-site or on a building’s roof) and then supplied to various
outlets.

Direct Water Supply System:

 Water is directly supplied to consumers from the main supply line without the need for storage

3.What are the advantages and disadvantages of direct water supply system over indirect water supply
system?

Direct Water Supply System:

Advantages: Lower infrastructure cost, no need for storage tanks, reduced maintenance, constant fresh
water supply.

Disadvantages: Vulnerable to supply interruptions, dependent on consistent main supply pressure.

Indirect Water Supply System:

Advantages: Water availability during supply outages, more control over water usage, allows for more
consistent pressure in individual buildings.

Disadvantages: Higher installation cost due to storage tanks, increased risk of contamination if tanks are
not maintained.

4.Distinguish between direct and indirect water supply system.

Direct Water Supply System:

Water is directly supplied to consumers from the main supply line without the need for storage tanks.

Suitable for areas with reliable, constant water pressure and availability.
2. Indirect Water Supply System:

Water is first stored in a tank (usually on-site or on a building’s roof) and then supplied to various
outlets.

5.Describe various components involved in water supply system.

 Water Treatment: Process of removing contaminants.

Facilities: Filtration units, disinfection chambers.
 Conveyance: Pipelines or channels that transport water from source to treatment.
Facilities: Aqueducts, transmission
 Distribution Network: System of pipes that deliver water to consumers.
Facilities: Valves, pipes, pressure regulators.
 Storage: Facilities for storing treated water.
Facilities: Reservoirs, water towers, tanks.
 Source of Water: Rivers, lakes, groundwater, or reservoirs.
Facilities: Dams, wells, intake structures.

6.In each components of water supply system, list down the basic facilities to enhance water supply to
the consumer.

 Distribution Network:Facilities: Valves, pipes, pressure regulators.

7.What are basic requirements for simple design of water supply system?

a)Reliable storage solutions.

b)Adequate water source.

c)Appropriate distribution layout.

d)Sustainable operation and maintenance practices.

e)Proper conveyance infrastructure.

8.Why water treatment is very important before water distribution to the community? Give six reasons.

 Improves water taste and odor.

 Ensures water safety by removing harmful microorganisms.
 Reduces the risk of pipe corrosion and infrastructure damage.
 Removes toxic substances and pollutants.
 Protects public health from waterborne diseases.
 Enhances the water's suitability for household and industrial use.

9.State components of direct water supply system.

i)Conveyance pipelines.

ii)Household fixtures (faucets, showers).

iii)Meters and valves.

iv)Water source (direct connection to mainlines).

10.State components of indirect water supply system.

i)Distribution pipes from tank to various outlets.

ii)Storage tanks.

iii)Water source (mainline to storage tank).

iv)Pressure control valves.
