WEEK: 9

TOPIC: APPLICATION OF LINEAR AND QUDRATIC EQUATIONS TO CAPITAL MARKET

1. Revision of solution of simultaneous linear and quadratic equations. E.g.
2. Word problems on linear equation, simultaneous linear equation, quadratic equations.
SUB-TOPIC: REVISION OF SOLUTION OF SIMULTANEOUS LINEAR AND QUADRATIC EQUATION
We shall first revise simultaneous linear equations.
Example: 1
Suppose
Solution
We shall make two different equations from the given equality.
()
Also ( )
We arrange

i.e ()
( )

Substitute for y in equation (i) gives ( )

Example 2: solve the pair of equations
[ ]
Solution
We shall write both sides of the equation in terms of powers of the same base than solve
simultaneously.

Substituting for y in equation (i) gives ( )

Let us consider a situation of simultaneous equation in which one is linear, the other is quadratic.
Example 3;
Solve

Solution
From one of the equations make one of the variables the subject of formula and substitute the
other equation.
()
( )
From (ii)
Substituting for y in (i) we have ( )

We shall now factor out 3.

Example 5:
A total wage bill of a school in a month is ₦980,000. There are 20 workers. Those that are
university graduates are paid ₦100,000 a month and others are paid ₦15,000. Find the number
of graduate sin the school.
Solution
Let the number of graduates be x
Let the number of non-graduates be y
If we divide the last equation by the equations becomes
()
( )
() ( )

There are 8 graduates in the school.

Simultaneous equations can be solved graphically by drawing the graphs of the
equations on the same axes. Their points of interception give the solutions. If one of the
equations is quadratic, there are usually two pairs of equations.

the management cadre are paid₦150,000 a month and others ₦30,000. Find the number of
managers in the company.
6. A factory has skilled and unskilled workers. The skilled workers are paid ₦3,000 per day and
unskilled ₦1,000 per day. If the total number of workers is 40 with a daily bill of ₦60,000 how
