1 Scope

JDM F15X1 specifies the neutral salt spray corrosion protection and torque/clamp force requirements for
electroplated zinc with chromate designated C according to JDM F15.

2 Corrosion Protection

2.1 Test Method

The neutral salt spray (NSS) test shall be conducted according to ISO 9227, ASTM B117 or equivalent.

2.2 Requirements
2.2.1 The significant surfaces shall show neither white corrosion products (except at corners or edges)
nor rust, visible to the unaided eye at normal reading distance, after continuous neutral salt spray for the

D test times specified in Table 1.

3 Torque/Clamp Force

The torque/clamp force requirements in JDM F15X1 apply to bolts, screws, studs and nuts with metric
thread or Unified inch thread when torque requirements are not otherwise specified.

3.1 Test Method

The torque/clamp force test shall be conducted according to ISO 16047 testing under standard conditions
except that, for testing inch series fasteners, the clearance hole and thickness of the test-bearing plate or
test washer are specified in clause 3.1.2.

Note 1 For general testing, a Skidmore-Wilhelm or similar load cell is acceptable.

For referee purposes, an automatic torque sensing device shall be used and rotation shall continue until
the specified clamp force is exceeded. A continuous record of torque and clamp force shall be evaluated

D D
to determine the torque for the specified clamp force.

3.1.1 Surrogate Bolt

R The surrogate bolt is a Hexagon bolt ISO 4014 - M10 x 50 - 10.9, with rolled threads, which is processed
with the production parts through all of the coating processes. R
A A
Testing of surrogate bolts shall be decisive for:
• bolts, screws or nuts of a size and property class or grade for which the clamp force and torque
range are not specified.

F • bolts or screws shorter than 2.5 times diameter.

• studs and bolts or screws that are not designed to be wrenched by the head.
F
T • nuts that are designed not to rotate.
T
Otherwise, either production parts or surrogate bolts may be used for routine testing, but, in case of
doubt, testing of the production parts shall be decisive.

3.1.2 Test-Bearing Plate or Test Washer for Testing Inch-Series Fasteners

The test-bearing plate or test washer for testing inch series fasteners shall be according to ISO 16047
except for the clearance hole diameter and the thickness.

The clearance hole shall be the normal clearance hole for inch fasteners according to ASME B18.2.8.

The minimum thickness shall be the minimum thickness for Type B Wide series plain washers according
to ASME B18.22.1.

4 Requirements

4.1 Surrogate Bolt

When evaluated at the test clamp force of 36100 N, the torque shall be within 67 Nm to 160 Nm.

4.2 Metric Bolt, Screw or Nut

When evaluated at the clamp force specified in Table 2 for the size and property class of the bolt, screw
or nut being tested, the tightening torque shall be between the minimum and maximum torque values
specified in Table 2 for that fastener.
