UNIT 4: READING COMPREHENSION
Acid rain
[1] Historically, air pollution comes from industries and transport. Factories, power
stations, and cars burn oil and coal. This rises into the air as different forms of
sulphur and nitrogen. The sulphur and nitrogen combine with water in the air to make
sulphuric or nitric acid. This falls to the ground as acid rain.
[2] We burn large quantities of coal and oil, and this creates millions of tonnes of
acid rain. The wind carries the rain long distances, and this creates problems. One
country makes acid rain, and it falls to the ground in another country, for example,
Canada gets a lot of acid rain from the USA, and Norway gets a lot of acid rain from
Britain.
coal : فحم oil : وقود/ بترول sulphur: كبريت
[3] Industrial countries also cause the greenhouse effect (also called “global
warming” or “climate change”). Burning coal and oil produces carbon dioxide (CO2).
The (CO2) increases in the Earth’s atmosphere, and retains heat from the sun (it works
like the glass in a greenhouse- it lets heat in, but doesn’t let the heat out).
[4] The Earth is getting hotter. Weather patterns are changing: some places have
no water for years, and some places have floods. When a country has no water, the
effects are very hard- in Chile in 1999, the result was electricity cuts around the country. There was no water for the hydro-
electric power stations.
carbon dioxide : ثاني أ كسيد الكربون atmosphere : غالف جوي heat : حرارة
Ozone layer depletion
[5] The ozone layer is a band of gas around the Earth. It protects us from dangerous ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the
sun. It is vital to human and animal survival. Unfortunately, we are producing chemicals which destroy the ozone layer. The
damage starts in the Antarctic and spreads. Sheep in the Magallanes are becoming blind
because the ozone layer is thinner. In Australia, a lot of people are getting skin cancer from
the sun.

3. Adverbs of frequency
Look at the rules for using adverbs of frequency.
Use adverbs of frequency (always, usually, often, rarely, etc.) to answer the question:
o How often…?
Adverbs of frequency go before all verbs (except to be) for example:
o I always go shopping on Sundays.
Adverbs of frequency go after the verb to be, for example:
o I am never late for school.
Look at the sentences below. Add an adverb of frequency to make them true for you.
Compare with a partner. Example:
I read in the morning. I hardly ever read in the morning.

Leisure and Entertainment
A-………………………………………………………………………………………………..
The British spend their free time in different ways. People generally use it to relax, but many people
also do voluntary work, especially for charities.
B……………………………………………………………………………………………………
A lot of free time is spent in the home, where the most popular leisure activity is watching television,
the average viewing time being 25 hours a week. People often record programs on video so that they can
watch later, and video recorders are also used for watching videos hired from a video rental shop.
C-……………………………………………………………………………………………………
Reading is also a favourite way of spending leisure time. The British spend a lot of time reading
newspapers and magazines.
D-………………………………………………………………………………………………
In the summer gardening is popular, and in winter it is often replaced by “do-it-yourself”, when people
spend their time improving or repairing their homes. Many people have pets to look after; taking the dog for a
daily walk is a regular routine.
E-……………………………………………………………………………………………………..
Some leisure activities are mostly or entirely social. Inviting friends for a drink or a meal at the pub is
the most usual one. Sometimes people join friends for a drink in a pub, or have dinner in a restaurant. A visit
to a pub often includes a game, for example billiards or darts.
F-…………………………………………………………………………………………………………
The extra leisure time available at weekends means that some leisure activities, many of them to do
with sport, normally take place only then. Traditional spectator sports include football, cricket, horse racing,
motor racing and motor cycle racing. Popular forms of exercise are swimming, tennis, ice-skating or roller
skating, cycling, climbing, and hill or country walking.
G-
……………………………………………………………………………………………………………….
Families often have a “day out” at the weekend, especially in summer, with a visit to a local event
such as a festival, fair or show. Young people especially go to clubs and discos, while people of all ages go to
the theatre, the cinema, art – exhibitions and concerts.

[1] The mass media play an important part in our lives. Newspapers, radio and especially TV inform us of what is
going on in this world and give us wonderful possibilities for education , entertainment, and communication. They also
influence the way we see the world. They can change our views.
[2] Of course, not all newspapers , TV programmes, , news presenters, radio commentators, or entertainers report
events objectively all the time. In other words, they can be clearly biased sometimes. However, there are many serious
journalists and TV reporters who try to be as fair and professional as possible. They try to provide us with reliable
information. Some people say that journalists are given too much freedom. They often intrude on people’s private lives.
They follow celebrities and print sensational stories about them which can be untrue or half-true often times. You’ve
probably heard of the “paparazzi” ; they are independent photographers who take pictures of
athletes, entertainers, politicians, and other celebrities, typically while going about their usual life routines. The questionis -
should this be allowed ?
[3] It is true that the world today is full of dramatic events, and most news seems to be bad news, but people aren’t
interested in ordinary events anymore. That is why there are so many TV programmes and articles about natural disasters,
plane crashes, wars, murders and robberies. Good news doesn’t usually make headlines. Bad news does.
[4] One main source of news for millions of people is television. People like TV news because they can see everything
with their own eyes, and that’s an important advantage. Seeing, as we know, is believing. Besides, it’s much more difficult
for politicians to lie in front of the cameras than on the front pages of newspapers. Still, others prefer the radio. It’s good
to listen to the radio while in the car, or in the open air, or while you you’re doing something around the house.
Newspapers don’t react to events as quickly as TV does, but they usually provide us with extra details, comments and
background information. The Internet has recently become another important source of information. Its main advantage is
that news appears on the screen as soon as things happen in real life and you don’t have to wait for news time on TV.

The Imilchil marriage ceremony takes place in the Atlas Mountains every year at
the end of September. Two main Amazigh tribes participate in the festival, the Ait
hadidu and Ait ouazza. Hundreds of young men and women meet and marry at the
three-day event. The festival is celebrated with great food, Aheydus music and
dancing. And it also offers an occasion for trading in which Berbers sell their sheep,
goats, mules or camels, and buy tea, sugar and other things to support their lonely
existence in the mountains for another year.
The Future brides wear all their jewellery of silver and amber. They also wear
colorful clothes, mainly blue, white and red shawls. Some of them are veiled, while
the others like to show off their beauty. Their cheeks are colored with rouge and
kohl in their eyes. They wear a rounded headdress if they have never been
married before or a pointed one if they are divorced or widowed.
On the last day of the Moussem, all the newly married couples must go to the
lakes Isli and Tislite for a traditional visit. It is believed that long ago a young man
loved a young girl whose parents did not approve because they were from
different tribes. The couple ran away and cried all night and their tears created the
two lakes. At the end of the day, the married couples go back to their tribes on
their donkeys and mules.
