    Today, the elderly often face a unique set of problems that give a sense of removal and loneliness

    from others around them. Older people have many issues that are swept under the rug, and in
    some cases, these people are unable to fend for themselves. Elders have some small benefits such
    as activities catering to an older age group, and a wide variety of nursing homes to choose from.
    However, with underfunded care homes and lack of consideration for professional skills, the
    senior citizens are being severely mistreated.

    Firstly, many nursing facilities are heavily understaffed and do not receive enough money that is
    needed to take care of patients. Since 2015, the number of nursing homes has dropped by 4%,
    and the number of residents has decreased by 2% with a steady decline. Places like this are often
    faced with many issues but are suppressed due to governments not paying enough attention to
    seniors. Many homes operate with insignificant staff, leading to overworked care givers who are
    unable to provide the level of attention residents need. In consequence, this lowers the residence
    quality of life at the end of many residents' journey.

    Another reason the elderly are ignored is through neglection of jobs due to their age. Many older
    adults find it difficult to get hired or even considered for job positions because of age
    discrimination. Employers often assume that older workers are not as capable as younger
    options. In the state of Florida, there is a maximum age limit of employment which is 65. Many
    sixty-five year adults have no intention of working, 19% of adults over sixty five are still in the
    workforce. However, in this society, the limit has been placed on age creating a form of age
    discrimination to older citizens.

    On the other hand, Naples is home to many places that seniors can enjoy themselves at. As there
    are some major disadvantages to living life in the older years, memories made are what keeps a
    smile on an ageing face. There are over 90 golf courses at all different levels and even dozens of
    different senior centers available. Naples is home to many people, 30% of our population are
    over the age of sixty-five, making it necessary to have places for senior citizens to appreciate.

    In Naples, a big part of our population is living in a nursing home. It is crucial that there are
    many different assisted living options for families of elderly that do not have the capacity to care
    for their family. As of 2024, Naples is home to 62 assisted living facilities and all of the residents
    that come along with those. Many young families cannot afford to attend to their older parents or
    grandparents, most put their loved ones into nursing homes to provide a better quality of life
    towards the end of their lives. Making it very important that this community has so many options
    for care homes.
    Overall, the elderly are clearly being ignored in society due to several significant factors.
    Underfunded care homes fail to provide the necessary support and quality of life that seniors
    deserve. The lack of consideration for their professional skills due to age discrimination further
    separates elders, making it difficult to find meaningful employment. As, they do have some
    small benefits. However, they cannot make up for the major mistreatment happening to our
    elders. These issues collectively demonstrate that our society needs to do much more to ensure
    that the elderly are treated with the dignity and care they deserve.
