Chapter 2

Solutions

1) Why is an increase in temperature observed on mixing ethanol with acetic acid?

2) Liquid A and B boil at 120oC and 150oC respectively at atmospheric pressure.

Which of them is expected to have higher pressure at 50 oC?

3) The freezing point depression of 0.1M MgCl2 solution is nearly thrice than
that of 0.1M urea solution. Why

4) An ionic compound AB is 50% dissociated in aqueous solution. Determine

the value of Van’t Hoff factor for this compound.

5) 2g each of two solutes A and B (molar mass of A>B) are dissolved separately
in 50g each of the same solvent. Which will show greater elevation in boiling
point?

6) A 1.00 molal aqueous solution of CCl3COOH is heated to its boiling point.

The solution has the boiling point of 100.18oC. Calculate the Van’t Hoff
factor for CCl3COOH. (Kb for water=0.512KKg/mol)

7) a) State Raoults law for a solution containing volatile components.

b) How does Raoults law become a special case of Henry’s law?

8) Assuming complete dissociation calculate the expected freezing point of a

solution prepared by dissolving 6.0g of Na2SO4.10H2O in 0.100Kg of water.
(Kf for water=1.86KKg/mol)

9) Show graphically how the vapour pressure of a solvent and a solution of non
volatile solute in it change with temperature. Mark on the graph the boiling
point of the solvent and the solution. Which of the two is higher and why?
10) Calculate the osmotic pressure of a solution obtained by mixing 100cm 3 of
0.25M solution of urea and 100cm3 of 0.1M solution of cane sugar at 293k

11) Give reasons.

a) The aquatic species feel more comfortable in cold water than in warm
water.
b) A person suffering from high blood pressure is advised to take
minimum quantity of common salt.
c) At high altitudes people suffer from a disease called anoxia.

12) V.P of pure water at 298K is 23.8mm of Hg. 50g of urea is dissolved in 850g of water.
Calculate the V.P of water for this solution and its relative lowering.

13) Calculate the b.pt. of a solution containing 0.456 g of camphor of mol. mass 152
dissolved in 31.4g of acetone of b.pt.56.300C if the molal elevation constant per 100g of
acetone is 17.20C

14) Some youngsters were playing volleyball near the sea shore. A scuba diver
came out of the sea and started crying with severe pain. Two players
immediately took him to the nearby hospital and saved his life.
a) What went wrong with the scuba diver?
b) What precautions should have been taken by him?
c) What values are shown by the two players?

15) What is the freezing point of 0.4 molal solution of acetic acid in benzene
in which it dimerises to the extent of 85%? Freezing point of C 6H6 is 278.4K and
its molar heat of fusion is 10.042 Kj/mol.

16) a) An aqueous solution of 3.12g of BaCl2 in 250g of water is found to boil at

100.08320C. Calculate the degree of dissociation of BaCl2. Kb for water is 0.52K/m.
b) Define azeotropes. Give an example of each maximum and minimum boiling
azeotrope.
