In your assigned readings, you learned how evidence is used to support the theory of evolution.
Using examples, briefly discuss how evidence is used to support evolution. Do you agree with
the use of this data/evidence? Explain your position.
==========================================
The first evidence that scientists use to support the theory of evolution is fossils, which show
how organisms were different in the past and how evolution is progressing (Avissar et al., 2013).
For example, scientists have found records of hominids, which are considered human ancestors,
and the records showed changes in the skull shapes that show how hominids evolved (Avissar et
al., 2013). The second evidence is the anatomy and embryology of organisms that show how
different organisms have a similar form of structures from the young to the adult form, which is
also known as homologous structures (Avissar et al., 2013). For example, the appendages bones
of adult humans, birds, dogs, and whales have similar construction and anatomy, which show
that these organisms share a common ancestor (Avissar et al., 2013). An example for
embryology, all vertebrate embryos develop tails and gill slits at their early stage of
development, which explains that vertebrate could have common ancestors (Avissar et al., 2013).
The third evidence is biogeography, which shows how organisms were distributed
geographically and how this is explained by evolution concerning the movement of the tectonic
plates over geological time (Avissar et al., 2013). For example, marsupials, like kangaroos who
are diverse, have evolved in Australia (Avissar et al., 2013). The fourth evidence is molecular
biology, showing that biological molecules have similarities that most, if not all living
organisms, represent shared evolutionary ancestry (Avissar et al., 2013). For example, all living
organisms’ ancestors reflect DNA as the genetic material with similar replication and expression
(Avissar et al., 2013).
In my opinion, I strongly agree with the pieces of evidence that support the theory of evolution.
This is because of the facts and data scientists have found so far about the evolution of different
organisms and their changes. Since scientists use fossils, anatomy and embryology,
biogeography, and molecular biology to see how organisms evolved over time, these are very
good pieces of evidence to support this theory (Avissar et al., 2013). Looking at the examples I
stated above for each piece of evidence, I think that the theory of evolution is correct. The theory
of evolution is correct until a new theory proves it wrong!
