Assignment 11 – Storm water drainage network design

A stormwater drainage network of an area is shown in Figure 1 and the drainage area, manhole and
pipe data are given in Table 1 and Table 2. The stormwater is to be discharged in to a river of which
the maximum water level is 7.8m above sea level.

Q1. Prepare design criteria for a stormwater drainage network assuming circular pipes will be
used. The design criteria should include pipe diameter, minimum slope, full flow velocity and
discharge calculated based on Colebrook‐White formula for wall roughness of 1.5mm and
water temperature 25 oC and minimum tractive force of either 0.9N/m2 or based on grit
transport for grit size of 0.95mm. Assume grit density of 2650kg/m3.

Q2. Design the storm drainage network based on the design criteria you set on Q1 for a 5 year
return period rainfall event. The IDF for the area is given by
