UNDERSTAND
Title: USING CONTEXT IN TEXT DEVELOPMENT

Context is a connection of written or spoken text that instantly link with word or passage that
clarify its meaning.

For clear meaning of context and thorough understanding of any text, hypertext and intertext
would be a great help.

This involves going back to the text to recognize the writer’s arguments and evidences so you
can start assessing the work of the writer.

A. HYPERTEXT

What is Hypertext? It is simply a non-linear way of presenting information, rather than reading or
learning about things in the order that an author, or editor, or publisher sets out for us, readers of
hypertext may follow their own path, create their own order-- their own meaning out the material.

How can you identify Hypertext? The definition of hypertext is a word or words that contain a link to
a website. An example of hypertext is the word “decreasing the snowpack” that links to the
https://www.climatesignals.org/climate-signals/snowpack

When you type a word or attach a link to that word upon clicking on that word, the reader is sent
to the site attached. It looks like Google.

Example: How does climate change make drought worse? Climate change has exacerbated
drought in parts of the US primarily by decreasing the snowpack and already small amount of water
available in streams and soils. Most droughts are driven by natural variability in precipitation. Climate
change-driven hotter temperatures, however, melt snowpack earlier, evaporate water in streams and
lakes, and evaporate water from soils, turning what would have been a moderate drought into a much
more severe drought. In some limited cases, there is also evidence that climate change is changing
rainfall patterns, blocking rain from reaching areas in need of water. These combined effects have made
what may have been moderate droughts severe or exceptional instead.

A. The three main pedagogical benefits of hypertext in the composition class include the
following:
1. It promotes dialogue.
2. It can be constructed as a collaborative medium.
3. It can be used in nearly any computer-facilitated classroom.

II. INTERTEXT
Intertext is the shaping of a text's meaning by another text. It is the interconnection between
similar or related works of literature that reflect and influence an audience's interpretation of the text.
Intertextuality is the relation between texts that are inflicted by means of quotations and allusion.

Example:
Tailor Swift’s song “Love Story” makes intertextuality references to Romeo and Juliet and
The Scarlet Letter:
“Cause you were Romeo, I was a scarlet letter and my daddy said stay away from Juliet
