Job Description
Title: Animal Flow Technician FLSA Status: Non-exempt
Department: Operations – Animal Flow
Reports to: Animal Flow Supervisor

Purpose of Position

To promote the mission and programs of the Animal Rescue League of Iowa by performing routine animal
movements, transfer preparations, transport between ARL facilities, and other related duties.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The following duties are normal for this position. These ae not to be constructed as exclusive or
all inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

Job Duties

Animal Care
 Handle, restrain and move animals
 Participate in stress and disease reduction efforts through purposeful and compassionate
handling and placement of animals in the shelter environment
 Communicate with other departments to coordinate and assist with the movement of shelter
animals
 Monitor animals to report health, behavior, or temperament issues to medical staff, behavior staff,
or supervisor as appropriate and to determine the path of an animal in shelter
 Provide feeding and care as needed when moving animals
 Transport animals as needed between ARL facilities
 Contribute to improve processes and procedures
 Practice and encourage the humane treatment of animals

Facility Care
 Follow established disease control protocols to clean, disinfect, and maintain shelter kennels,
cages, and general areas as assigned and instructed
 Operate laundry, cleaning, dishwashing, and other equipment as requested
 Maintain equipment in good working condition and report need for repair or replacement of
equipment to the Animal Flow Supervisor

People Care
 Cultivate positive customer relations through professional, courteous, and educational
interactions while actively promoting our mission, services, programs, and events
 Provide prompt, courteous, and excellent customer service to all internal and external customers
at all times
 Work cooperatively with all volunteers, recognizing the talent and commitment they bring to the
organization

Additional Responsibilities
 Demonstrate knowledge of and adherence to ARL policies and procedures
 Ensure a safe work environment, follow all safety guidelines, and model safe work practices

 Take immediate action to address any safety concerns that could put a staff member, volunteer,
customer, animal or the organization at risk
 Regularly participate in and complete projects working directly with the Animal Flow Supervisor
 Perform other duties as assigned at any Animal Rescue League locations

Qualifications

Education and/or Experience

 High School Diploma or GED required


 Animal Care Experience preferred

Language Ability

 Ability to speak and write in proper English


 Proficient in accurate spelling and grammar

 Must be able to perform basic mathematical skills; addition, subtraction, multiplication and
division

 Proficient with Microsoft Suite; Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel, Explorer and Chrome

management software and scheduling software

 Can be required to frequently stand, walk, sit, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel or crouch.

 Must be able to deal effectively with customer service issues
 Work may expose employee to odors, diseases of animals that are possibly contagious, bites,
scratches, animal waste and moderate noise levels
 Long periods of standing
 Long periods of sitting
 Valid Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record
 Work may require outdoors in high heat or cold environment on occasion

 Ability to be flexible with work schedule to meet the demands of the organization

 While preforming the duties of the job, the employee may be or is occasionally exposed to
unpleasant smells or airborne particles (i.e. pet dander)
 The noise level in the work environment can be loud
 Must not have pet allergies that would prevent employee from being at work
 Must be capable of handling stressful situations and ever changing daily workloads and demands

It is the policy of the Animal Rescue League that employment for this position is at will, which means that
employment is for no specific term and that employment may be terminated by the employee or the
Animal Rescue League at any time without cause.
