S SC CHSL: An Introduction
Staff Selection Commission (SSC) conducts the SSC Combined Higher Secondary Level exam
every year for passed higher secondary candidates generally in the month of September /
October / November / December to fill up various clerical vacancies at Central government
offices across the country through the process of SSC CHSL.
The SSC Combined Higher Secondary Level exam consists of Tier 1 (Objective Multiple Choice
- Computer-Based), Tier 2 (Descriptive Paper in English/Hindi - Pen and Paper based), and Tier
0
3 (Skill Test/Computer Proficiency Test).

SSC CHSL Selection Process, candidates, who qualify in the objective-type exam by securing
minimum qualifying marks, are called for Skill Test or Typing Test. The qualifying candidates

E ligibility Criteria
According to SSC CHSL Eligibility Criteria, the candidate applying for the competitive exam
must be a citizen of India.
Educational Qualification: The applicant must have passed the 12th Standard or equivalent or
higher examination from a recognized Board or University.
Age Limit: The candidate must be aged between 18 years to 27 years as on the date specified

Reservation Criteria: SSC CHSL Reservation Criteria provides upper age relaxation to the

reserved category candidates up to the prescribed maximum limits. SSC gives an age
relaxation of up to a maximum of 5 years to candidates belonging to the Scheduled
Caste/Scheduled Tribe and up to a maximum of 3 years to the candidates who belong to the
Other Backward Classes category.

SSC invites applications in both online modes every year through releasing notifications. The

registration of candidates for the recruitment exam is done in the month of June/July/ August.
The application process continues for around a month. A candidate has to fill in only one

application online and submit it to the concerned SSC Regional/Sub-Regional office before the
deadline.

The applicants have to pay a fee of Rs 100/- only for the SSC CHSL Application Form. The
candidates, who are submitting applications in paper mode, pay the fee by pasting “Central
Recruitment Fee Stamps (CRFS)” on the form. Those candidates, who submit their applications

online, have to pay the fee only through State Bank of India, via Challan or SBI Net Banking.

Women candidates, Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe category candidates, Physically
Handicapped, and Ex-serviceman eligible for reservation are exempted from paying fees.

E xam Pattern
The two-hour SSC CHSL exam is an objective-type test with 200 questions, carrying 1 mark
each. The SSC CHSL Exam Pattern is divided into 4 parts - General Intelligence, English
Language, Quantitative Aptitude and General Awareness. Each part consists of 50 questions.
There is a deduction of 0.25 marks as a negative marking for every wrong answer marked by
the candidate.
