GOAL 9: INDUSTRY,

INNOVATION AND
INFRASCTRUCTURE
Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and
sustainable industrialization and foster innovation
GOALS AND OBJECTIVES

• Sustainable Development Goal 9 seeks to build resilient infrastructure,

promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation.
This SDG enc ompasses three impor tant aspec ts of sustainable
development: infrastructure, industrialization and innovation.
• Infrastructure provides the basic physical systems and structures
essential to the operation of a society or enterprise.
• Industrialization drives economic growth, creates job opportunities and
thereby reduces income poverty.
• Innovation advances the technological capabilities of industrial sectors
and prompts the development of new skills. Inclusive and sustainable
industrial development is the primary source of income generation, allows
for rapid and sustained increases in living standards for all people, and
provides the technological solutions needed for environmentally sound
industrialization.
SDG 9: INDUSTRY, INNOVATION AND
INFRASCTRUCTURE
• SDG 9 - 'Build resilient infrastructure,
pr o m o t e i nc l usi v e a nd sust a i na bl e
industrialization and foster innovation' - is
made up of 8 targets and 12 indicators.
• It covers both measures of sustainable
infrastructures (9.1, 9.4) and measures of
sustainable industrialization (9.2, 9.4). The
goal also addresses the enhancement in
access to f inancial services (9.3) and of
scientif ic research (9.5). The means of
implementation focus on sustainable
infrastructure and technology
development (9.a, 9.b) and on improved
access to ICT i(9.c).
UN TARGETS AND INDICATORS FOR GOAL 9
EFFORTS TO BE MADE BY LOCAL AND INTERNATIONAL
COUNTRIES TO ACHIEVE SDG 9
• Investments in infrastructure – transport, irrigation, energy and information and
communication technology – are crucial to achieving sustainable development
and empowering communities in many countries. To achieve Goal 9 by 2030, it is
also essential to support LDCs, invest in advanced technologies, lower carbon
emissions and increase mobile broadband access.
• Investments in Transportation: Countries are investing in modern transportation
infrastructure, such as railways, roads, and ports, to improve connectivity and
facilitate trade.
• Renewable Energy Infrastructure: The expansion of renewable energy sources like
solar, wind, and hydropower is a major focus, reducing dependence on fossil fuels
and mitigating climate change.
• Digital Infrastructure: Investments in broadband internet and telecommunications
are essential for promoting innovation and economic development.
• Sustainable Urban Planning: Cities are implementing sustainable urban
development plans to create livable and resilient urban environments.
EFFORTS TO BE MADE BY LOCAL AND INTERNATIONAL
COUNTRIES TO ACHIEVE SDG 9
In terms of Sustainable Industrialization:
• Promotion of Green Industries: Governments are encouraging the growth
of green industries, such as renewable energy, clean technology, and
sustainable agriculture.
• Industrial Upgrading: Efforts are being made to upgrade existing industries
to make them more efficient, sustainable, and competitive.
• Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) Development: Supporting SMEs is
crucial for job creation and economic growth. Governments are providing
incentives and training to help SMEs thrive.
EFFORTS TO BE MADE BY LOCAL AND INTERNATIONAL
COUNTRIES TO ACHIEVE SDG 9
In terms of Fostering Innovation:
• Research and Development (R&D): Investment in R&D is essential for
developing new technologies and products. Governments and businesses
are increasing their R&D spending.
• Intellectual Property Protection: Strong intellectual property rights are
crucial for incentivizing innovation. Governments are working to protect
inventors and entrepreneurs.
• Technology Transfer: Facilitating technology transfer between developed
and developing countries can help accelerate innovation in less developed
regions.
SPECIFIC EXAMPLES AND INITIATIVES

• China's Belt and Road Initiative: This massive infrastructure project aims to
connect Asia, Europe, and Africa through transportation and communication
networks.
• The Green New Deal: Proposed in the United States, this ambitious plan
aims to address climate change and create jobs through investments in
clean energy infrastructure.
• The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) themselves: The SDGs provide a
framework for countries to prioritize sustainable development, including
infrastructure, industrialization, and innovation. While significant progress
has been made, there is still much work to be done to achieve the goals of
SDG 9. Continued investment, policy reforms, and international cooperation
are essential to ensure a sustainable and inclusive future for all.
