ABSTRACT
The aim of this research was to find out the effect of teachers’ qualification on senior secondary
school two(2) achievement in chemistry in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The study employed a survey research design. A total of 20 staff were used in the study, the
instrument used for data collection was the Respondent Teachers Qualification Test (RTQT)
which were administered personally by the researcher to four randomly selected secondary
schools in Jos North Local Government Area of Plateau State. The researcher conducted a
pilot-testing on chemistry students in a selected government secondary school in Jos North, in
other to determine the reliability of the instrument. Test and re-test technique was used to
estimate the reliability of the instrument, which involved administering the same test twice to the
group of respondents who had been identified for this purpose. Twenty (20) copies of the
questionnaires were used for the pilot-testing. Ten (10) copies were initially administered
followed by another ten (10) copies after two weeks. The instrument was thereafter analyzed and
the reliability coefficient was 0.72, which was high enough for a study of this nature and showed
the reliability of the instrument. The method used for data analysis was simple percentage to
examine the findings. Among the major findings for this is that the higher the qualification of
chemistry teachers, the higher the performance of chemistry students in Jos North Local
Government Area of Plateau State. Also, there is a significant impact relationship between
chemistry teachers’ qualification and the academic performance of senior secondary school
chemistry students. With this finding, the researcher recommends that the government and other
stake holders of every institution should set standard in terms of qualification for those who will
teach in the senior secondary schools, thereby making it a challenge for every teacher to study
further to meet the set standard as it would bring about more qualified teachers.
